HOW THE HOLIDAY CAME TO BE

A Brussels federation gave the profession a date.

Global FM, the Global Facility Management Association, announced World FM Day in a press release datelined Brussels on 13 March 2009. The release called it the first-ever World FM Day, set it for 28 August 2009, and said member organisations on five different continents would hold events. Global FM's chairman at the time was Steve Gladwin.

INTRO

US labor statistics had no code for this job until 2018

World Facilities Management Day had been on the calendar for years before the United States government worked out how to count the people it honours. The federal occupation classification carried no code for facilities managers at all. It listed "facilities planning and maintenance" among the examples of an administrative service, filed alongside mail distribution.

That changed in 2018, when one management category was split in two. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists Facilities Managers among the thirty-two occupations created that year by breaking an existing one apart.

The day was built for this exact problem. The profession's own trade body concedes the difficulty: facility managers often are not called facility managers, even when parts of the work are theirs.

ORIGINS

World Facilities Management Day history

INTRODUCTION

In 1978 Herman Miller Research Corp. hosted a conference with an unpromising title, "Facility Influence on Productivity." Three men met there who did not yet have a settled name for what they did.

They were George Graves of Texas Eastern Transmission Corp., Charles Hitch of Manufacturer's Bank in Detroit, and David Armstrong of Michigan State University. In May 1980 Graves called a meeting in Houston. By the time it broke up, the National Facility Management Association had a constitution and a set of bylaws.

CHAPTER 01

A profession learns to count itself

The new association's first meeting that October drew 47 participants. Only 25 of them were members. It renamed itself the International Facility Management Association in 1982, after a chapter was chartered in Toronto.

Headquarters at that point was two staff in Ann Arbor, Michigan, serving just over 400 members. In 1986 the association published its first official statement on facility management, an attempt to define the profession from the inside. Ten years after the rename, membership had passed 10,000.

CHAPTER 02

Brussels sets a date

Global FM is a federation of national facilities management associations, registered at an address in Brussels. In 2009 it decided the profession needed a day of its own.

The aims were set out plainly. Global FM wanted worldwide coverage of facilities management's ideals not only within the profession and industry, but also to governments and the general public.

CHAPTER 03

The day that would not sit still

The first World FM Day fell on 28 August 2009. It moved to late June in 2011. Global FM put it in mid July in 2016, then moved it into May, where it has stayed.

Global FM still runs the day, now with IWFM in the UK and IFMA in the United States alongside it. The theme for 2026 is "Cultivating belonging through built environments."

That is a long way from the 1978 conference, where three men met to talk about a job that had no agreed name.

Why World Facilities Management Day Matters

BOUNDARIES

The count depends entirely on where the line is drawn.

The US federal definition of a facilities manager rules out five neighbouring occupations, among them property and real estate managers, general maintenance and repair workers, and the supervisors of building cleaning and grounds crews. Any count of the profession therefore depends on where that line is drawn.

RECOGNITION

A US state governor put it in writing

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a proclamation recognising 10 May 2023 as World Facility Management Day, after IFMA wrote to his office that March. The declaration credited facility managers with having facilitated the gradual reopening of business and public spaces during the pandemic.

AWARDS

The industry announces its winners on the day

Member associations put projects forward from their own awards schemes, and Global FM's international judges pick the winners, who are announced on World FM Day itself. The gold award in 2024 went to the British Antarctic Survey.
