Methodology

How we ran this poll

Every study on this site is a fresh poll. Here’s exactly how this one was run.

To determine the most popular book in each state, Holiday Calendar partnered with a leading retail analytics firm to analyze anonymized book purchase data from January 1st through August 31st, 2024. The dataset encompassed transactions from major national booksellers, independent retailers, and online platforms, covering both physical and digital book sales. Purchases were mapped to the buyer's home state using anonymized billing address data. Titles were standardized across editions, formats (hardcover, paperback, e-book, and audiobook), and ISBNs to ensure accurate aggregation. The analysis focused on individual titles rather than authors or series, with state-level rankings determined by total unit sales. To qualify for ranking, a title needed a minimum sales threshold within a given state to prevent statistical anomalies from low-volume purchases. The resulting state-by-state rankings reflect the reading preferences of millions of American book buyers over an eight-month period.
