The dog was not just a pet. Under the Aztecs, who later absorbed Toltec culture, these small dogs carried spiritual weight. When a noble died, a Chihuahua-type dog might be sacrificed and buried with the body to guide the owner's soul onward.

CHAPTER 01

From Aztec markets to an American kennel

In 1520, Hernan Cortes wrote to the Spanish crown about small dogs the Aztecs raised and sold in their markets, one of the earliest European notes on the breed's forerunners. The animals nearly vanished after the conquest, then resurfaced in the wild and in villages.

Americans found them in the 1800s in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, which is how the breed got its name. Interest grew fast. In 1904 the American Kennel Club recognized the Chihuahua, registering a dog named Midget as the first of the breed.

CHAPTER 02

Proof in the DNA

For years some researchers doubted the ancient-Mexico story, guessing the modern dog descended from European toy breeds instead. A 2013 study put the maternal line to the test. Researchers found a mitochondrial marker present in pre-Columbian Mexican dog remains and in roughly a third of modern Chihuahuas, evidence the female line really does reach back to Mexico before Columbus.

The holiday itself has a far humbler origin. Nadia Alterio, a Canadian dog blogger and former Miss British Columbia, ran a site called FamousChihuahua.com built around her own dog, Teaka.
