Only four names have ever held this record

For 42 straight years, no two letter name in America's birth records ranked higher than Ty. The run began in 1976 and ended in 2017. National Ty Day belongs to the people who carry the name.

Only four names have held that position since the records begin in 1880. Ed held it first, then Jo for more than half a century, then Ty. Bo has held it since 2018.

The day itself has no comparable record. No founder, proclamation or campaign has been traced to it, and National Today has no page for it.

Ty Day history

INTRODUCTION

A name that begins as a short form of another one is hard to count. It lives in speech long before a registrar writes it down on its own.

Ty crossed that line in 1915, the first year at least five American boys were given it. Five is not an arbitrary number here. The Social Security Administration excludes any name with fewer than five occurrences in a year, so 1915 marks the year Ty became visible rather than the year it began.

CHAPTER 01

Four decades to the top 1000

Visibility is not popularity. Ty stayed outside the top 1000 American boys' names until 1955, when 71 births finally carried it in.

The handover that followed was less a conquest than an inheritance. Jo had led the two letter names since 1923, and in 1976 it slipped to 461st. Ty passed it that year on 335 births, without climbing much itself.

CHAPTER 02

A climb, then a cliff

Then the name climbed properly. In 2005 it reached 169th place, the best rank in 146 years of national data. That was its largest year too, on 2,451 births.

The fall was faster than the climb. Registrars recorded 1,798 boys in 2006, a drop of 653 in a single year and the sharpest the name has ever taken.

Ty led the two letter names for the last time in 2017. Bo took the position the following year by rising, from 610th to 572nd, while Ty barely moved.

CHAPTER 03

A day with no author

The name has a record. The day attached to it does not.

No founder, proclamation or campaign has been traced to National Ty Day. National Day Calendar's own January 22 page, in the Internet Archive's capture of 1 August 2025, lists National Blonde Brownie Day, National Polka Dot Day and National Sanctity of Human Life Day, and not this one.

Every Ty born since 1915 sits somewhere in the national files. The day itself is not in any of them.

Ty is a Welsh name meaning house.

The truth

Welsh does have the word ty, spelled with a circumflex, and it does mean house, from Proto-Celtic tegos. But Behind the Name traces the English given name Ty to longer names beginning with the same two letters, and records no Welsh derivation for it.

The myth

Ty Cobb's fame is what put the name into circulation.

The truth

Across his entire playing career, from 1905 to 1928, the name never passed eight boys in a single year. In 17 of those 24 years fewer than five American boys were named Ty, which is below the threshold at which the figures are published at all.
