No founder, organization, proclamation, or campaign establishing International Friendship Month could be documented. It circulates informally through online holiday calendars and friendship-themed promotion, encouraging cross-cultural connection across February. It is separate from the dated friendship days that do have records: the United Nations International Day of Friendship on July 30 and the United States National Friendship Day on the first Sunday in August.
A number for how many people you can really know
For most of human history, no one tried to count friendship. Then in the early 1990s the anthropologist Robin Dunbar did. Plotting primate brain size against the size of their social groups, he extrapolated a ceiling for humans of about 150 stable relationships.
The number came with structure. Inside the 150 sit smaller rings: roughly 50 you would invite to a big party, 15 you lean on, and an inner 5 you would call in a crisis. Friendship, in this view, is not one pool but a set of nested circles, each one harder to enter than the last.
