Three decades between the play and the name

Peter Pan opened in 1904, and Wendy Darling walked onto a stage carrying a name almost nobody had. National Wendy Day is the day that name eventually earned. Getting there took far longer than the usual story admits.

Ten American girls were recorded as Wendy in 1934, thirty years after the play. In Barrie's own country the name is missing from the England and Wales top hundred in 1914. It is missing from the snapshot taken a decade later too.

Then it broke. The American total reached 11,223 girls in a single year. That peak came in 1967, and Britain's highest published rank came earlier still.

Wendy Day history

INTRODUCTION

Margaret Henley could not say her Rs. She was the daughter of the poet William Ernest Henley, and when she wanted to call J.M. Barrie her friendy it came out fwendy. She died of cerebral meningitis in February 1894, aged five.

Ten years later Barrie put the sound on a stage. Wendy Darling took her name from a dead child's mispronunciation. The question that has followed ever since is whether Barrie invented the name or only borrowed it.

CHAPTER 01

The argument nobody has settled

The reference works disagree, and they disagree carefully. Behind the Name says the name was used before the play, rarely, and that a link to Gwendolen is only what it could be. A column for the American Name Society pushes the other way, finding no good evidence that Wendy served as a pet form of Gwendoline beforehand.

A Straight Dope staff report takes the opposite side, citing census records from both countries and an Ohio Wendy born in 1828. All three agree on one thing. Before the play the name was vanishingly rare.

CHAPTER 02

What the registers actually show

Afterwards took a while. Wendy first clears the Social Security threshold in 1918. It then drops out of the files again in six separate years.

The real move comes three decades on, and it lands in both countries at once. Wendy entered the England and Wales top hundred in 1934, near the bottom of the list.

The climb after that was fast, and the fall was faster. By 1984 the name was gone from the British list altogether.

CHAPTER 03

No founder, no year, no reason for March 30

National Wendy Day carries none of this documentation. No founder, no founding year, no proclamation and no explanation for the date has been located, and the accounts in circulation contradict one another. The name left a paper trail in two national registers, which is more than the day itself can claim.

LITERATURE

Vanessa, Pamela and Dorian began on a page. Wendy perhaps.

An American Name Society column places Wendy among names that entered English from a writer's page, naming Vanessa, Pamela and Dorian in the same breath. Whether Wendy fully belongs on that list is exactly what the reference works still argue about.

SPELLING

Wendi and Wendie are not Wendy

Both the American and British registers count the exact spelling recorded and do not merge similar ones. A Wendi is not counted as a Wendy in either country's published figures.

GENERATION

The name dates the person

Wendy was scarce before the 1930s and had fallen away again by the 1990s, with the bulk of its bearers born in the decades between. That concentration means the name carries a rough birth decade with it.

Surprising facts about National Wendy Day

There is a place in England called Wendy

A Cambridgeshire hamlet carries the name and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Wandrie, with 17 residents recorded. Its name means river-bend island, after a sharp turn in the North Ditch.

The burger chain's namesake was not named Wendy

Dave Thomas tried all five of his children's names before settling on his daughter Melinda Lou's nickname. Her siblings could not pronounce her name and called her Wenda first, which is how the sign came to read Wendy's.

Her father apologised for it later

Before he died in 2002, Dave Thomas told his daughter he was sorry he had used her name. He explained, "I should've just named it after myself, because it put a lot of pressure on you."

Wendy has been a boy's name too

The Social Security files record 951 American boys named Wendy across 55 separate years. The first of them appear in 1947 and the last in 2011.

Gwendoline faded as Wendy climbed

In the British snapshots Gwendoline rises from 56th in 1904 to 40th in 1924, then falls away over the decades Wendy arrives and peaks. No source connects the two, and the published records show only the sequence.
