HOW THE HOLIDAY CAME TO BE

Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, conceived the idea of a day honoring physicians. The first observance was held on March 30, 1933, by the Barrow County Alliance to the Barrow County Medical Society in Winder, Georgia. They chose the date to mark the 1842 anniversary of Dr. Crawford Long's first use of ether anesthesia.
