HOW THE HOLIDAY CAME TO BE

The date was announced twelve days early, in the future tense.

No founder or establishing organisation has been traced for National Porter Day. The earliest external mention located is a staff bulletin from NHS Professionals, the NHS's own staff bank, dated 28 September 2023, which told bank members the day was coming up on 10 October and that the organisation would share porters' testimonials.

Under three in four NHS porters work in portering

National Porter Day marks a job the NHS cannot quite keep in one place. Measured in full time equivalents, fewer than three in four of the NHS's porters in England work in a portering department. The rest are somewhere else in the building.

NHS England's workforce record files porters under 57 separate areas of work. Roughly 320 full time equivalents are inside operating departments. Others sit in imaging, in pharmacy, in medical physics.

That is the shape of the work this day recognises. Not one team waiting by a loading bay, but a role that reappears wherever a hospital needs something, or someone, moved.

Porter Day history

INTRODUCTION

English has two words spelled porter, and they were never the same word. Collins traces the doorkeeper to the 13th century, from the Latin porta, a door. The carrier is a separate word, dated to the 14th century, from portare, to carry.

Both senses are still on the NHS's own list of porter titles. One entry reads security porter. Another reads operating theatre porter.

CHAPTER 01

The beer took the name, not the other way round

In the 1700s the word attached itself to a beer. Collins dates the ale to that century and derives it from porter's ale, apparently because it was a favourite drink of porters. The hedge is the dictionary's own.

One account is far less cautious. It credits Ralph Harwood with inventing porter at a Shoreditch brewhouse in 1722. The Oxford Companion to Beer calls that the most persistent and fanciful tale, says most objectivists agree there is very little hard evidence for it, and concludes it is probably untrue.

CHAPTER 02

A licence to carry fish

Those porters carried for the markets. An Act of 1698 made Billingsgate a free market for the sale of fish. Inside it, the sellers and their porters were the only people allowed to move the fish.

That ended in 2012. The City of London Corporation stripped the porters of those licences, and anyone could do the work. Chris Gill, who had started at the market at 18, lost his job along with more than 90 other fish porters.

The licences had carried holiday and sick pay with them. Traders could now use casual labour instead.

CHAPTER 03

A day that arrived without an author

Against all that, the hospital porter is the version that grew. The England count fell to 7,145.7 full time equivalents in September 2014. Ten years later it stood at 8,969.0, the highest in the published series.

Nobody has claimed the day itself. Its earliest traced mention is a bulletin the NHS's own staff bank sent out in late September 2023, where it sat between IT Professionals Day and Thank Your Cleaner Day.

That bulletin is written in the future tense. It names the date and says what the organisation intends to do on it. That is an announcement, not a record of anything having happened.

Band 2's top of scale is its starting point.

NHS Health Careers says a porter would typically start on Agenda for Change band 2, with team leaders typically on band 3. In England's 2026/27 table, band 2 is the only band still open to new entrants whose top step point is the same figure as its entry step point.

Hazardous waste and the mortuary are on the list

The government's own job profile lists disposing of hazardous clinical waste and moving deceased patients to the mortuary among a hospital porter's day to day tasks. NHS Health Careers adds blood samples, cylinders of gas and trolleys of food to what porters move.

ENTRY

Nothing on paper gates the way in

Health Careers states there are no set entry requirements for a hospital porter, beyond the good standard of numeracy and literacy employers expect. The National Careers Service gives the same route: apply directly, and the employer trains you in manual handling and health and safety once you start.

Moving patients on trolleys and in wheelchairs is on the job's official list. If a porter moved you, say so to them directly, or to the trust, rather than only to the clinical team.

Portering sits inside estates and facilities rather than a clinical directorate. If your organisation runs a staff award, check that the team is eligible for it.
