International Clouded Leopard Day Timeline

Clouded Leopard Described

In the early 1800s, the Clouded Leopard was first described scientifically by western scientists, although these incredible cats were known to local communities long before.

Species Classification Amendment

In 1929, the Clouded Leopard was moved from the genus Felis (including most small cats) to the genus Neofelis, acknowledging its uniqueness.

Clouded Leopards on CITES I

In 1988, both clouded leopard species were listed on Appendix I of CITES, banning international trade in specimens or parts without a permit.

Recognition for Sunda Clouded Leopard

Scientists officially recognized the Sunda Clouded Leopard, native to Sumatra and Borneo, as a unique species separate from the mainland Clouded Leopard in 2008.
