Joel Kopple, founder of the IFKF, conceived the observance in 2003 to address chronic kidney disease as an under-prioritized global health threat. The first observance was held on March 7, 2006, with a memorandum of understanding signed by the ISN and IFKF formally establishing the joint annual event.
Introduction
It's time to recognize the importance of healthy kidneys and raise awareness about kidney disease on World Kidney Day, March 10. This day has been celebrated since 2006, when it was established by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations. Every year, this special day is dedicated to raising awareness about kidney health and educating people about how to take care of their kidneys. It's also an opportunity to honor those who have suffered from kidney diseases and celebrate advances in treatment options.
