Community-organized marches in June 1970 commemorating the first anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising grew organically into a month of LGBTQ+ celebration and advocacy across cities worldwide. President Clinton's 1999 proclamation was the first federal recognition of an already established observance.
