The National Women's History Project lobbied Congress for national recognition, resulting in the passage of Pub. L. 100-9 in 1987, which designated March as Women's History Month. President Reagan issued Proclamation 5619 in response, honoring women's overlooked contributions across American history.
Introduction
March is a special month! It marks the start of National Women’s History Month on March 1. This is an entire month dedicated to celebrating women’s accomplishments and contributions to history, society, and culture. The celebration dates back to 1981 when it was first recognized by Congress as “Women’s History Week”. Since then, the event has grown into a full month-long celebration that includes events, activities, and initiatives honoring all the amazing women who have made our world a better place.
