The National Institute for Women of Color (NIWC), founded in 1981, proclaimed March 1 as National Women of Color Day in 1986 in response to a suggestion by Ohio University administrator Pat Williams. It marked the start of Women's History Month to recognize contributions of women of color. Suzanne Brooks later helped expand it internationally in the 1990s.
