Justin peaked in 1988. American parents gave the name to 35,055 boys that year, more than in any year before or since. Justin Bieber would not be born for another six years.

Bieber released his first single in May 2009. The name had already given up 75.4% of its peak. Its last rising year was 2007.

October 8 is National Justin Day. The story usually attached to the name runs the other way round: a pop star made it famous, and the Justins followed. The birth files say the wave crested first.

CHAPTER 01

A name assembled from the word for law

Justin comes from the Latin Iustinus, which Etymonline glosses as literally "just". Behind it sits iustus, the adjective Roman writers used for what was upright, equitable and in accordance with law. Behind that sits ius, the word for a legal right.

The ending is a Roman name factory. The suffix -inus turned ordinary adjectives into proper names, and it produced Augustinus and Constantinus alongside Justinus. English still carries the same ius in jury and in injury.

CHAPTER 02

A philosopher, then a swineherd

The philosopher came first. Justin Martyr was born around the year 100 at Flavia Neapolis in Palestine, the town now called Nablus. He addressed his Major Apology to the emperors Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius.

He was denounced to the Roman prefect as subversive, then condemned and beheaded at Rome. The next Justin to matter made no arguments at all, only a climb. Britannica records that Justin I was born of Illyrian peasant stock and worked as a swineherd in his youth.

CHAPTER 03

A borrowed name on the Code of Justinian

Justinian I was not born Justinian. Britannica gives his birth name as Petrus Sabbatius, and states that Justinianus "was a Roman name that he took from his uncle, the emperor Justin I, to whom he owed his advancement". The Code of Justinian is named for a man who borrowed the name.

A commission set up in 528 produced the Codex Constitutionum, published the following year, with the Digest and the Institutes after it. Much of that work was supervised by Tribonian, the emperor's most important judicial minister. A code of law ended up carrying a name built from the Latin word for legal right.

How the day itself arrived

The name's paper trail runs continuously from the second century. The observance's trail begins in this decade. What can be documented about National Justin Day is a date and a circulation: October 8, carried by holiday-listing sites.

The earliest archived listing for the day was captured in August 2022. The wider claim that the name is old in English does not survive the files either. Behind the Name puts its English use as occasional since the late Middle Ages and says it "did not become common until the second half of the 20th century".
