No founder, establishing organisation or first-observance record has been identified for National Jean Day, and a search of the US Federal Register returns no document carrying the phrase. The earliest dated evidence of the day in circulation is a third-party holiday listing captured by the Internet Archive on 12 August 2022, carrying the same 15 August date and describing a day about the name; that capture dates the listing rather than the observance.

Since 1990 American boys named Jean have outnumbered girls

In English, Jean is a woman's name. In the United States it is now mostly given to boys.

In 1990 the name went to 357 newborn boys and 265 girls. Boys have led in every year since, a run of 36 years through the 2025 file. It is the only such run in the Social Security Administration's 146 years of national name records.

August 15 is National Jean Day, a day for the people who carry the name. Who started it is not known, and the better question is which Jean it is for.

INTRODUCTION

Two different names wear the same four letters. Behind the Name keeps them as separate entries and links each to the other under the heading Same Spelling, giving both the same Hebrew roots.

Both run back to Yochanan, meaning Yahweh is gracious. The French Jean is a man's name, the modern form of Jehan, which came from the Latin Iohannes through Old French. Victor Hugo gave it to Jean Valjean in Les Misérables in 1862.

CHAPTER 01

Fifty-eight years at the top in France

Jean is at the top of the French record from the day it opens. INSEE's own rank column keeps it at number one until 1957.

Then the run ended. Philippe took first place in 1958, and by 1959 Jean had slipped to third.

CHAPTER 02

Then the hyphen arrived

As the bare name fell, hyphenated versions of it were rising. INSEE counts Jean-Pierre, Jean-Claude and Jean-Luc as names in their own right, and they kept climbing for another decade.

The hyphen holds some famous names. Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Jean-Paul Sartre both carry it, while Jean Calvin and the Dadaist Jean Arp do not.

CHAPTER 03

The English Jean came the other way

The feminine Jean did not come from the French masculine one. It goes back to the Old French Jehanne, and was common in England and Scotland through the Middle Ages.

Then England let it go. On Behind the Name's account it returned to English from Scotland in the 1800s, which is why reference books still file Jean as the Scottish form of Jane.
