No one has settled what Elaine means: the strongest sources hedge between the Greek for torch and the Greek for moon. The day takes no side and celebrates the name anyway.
National Elaine Day is picked up each October 16 by consumer media and by people who carry the name, which makes it an observance with a following and an unknown author. No founder, first-observance record or registration has been identified.
Most old names that fall never come back. Consider the American girls' names that once reached the top 100. Narrow those to the ones that bottomed out in 2005-2015.
That leaves 292 names, and the typical one still sits below its own low. Twenty-four have at least doubled since. Elaine is the biggest of the twenty-four by its 2025 count.
It reached 1,007 births against a low of 343. That low came in 2010.
This is a recovery, not a restoration. Elaine's biggest year by count was 1947. The 2025 figure is one seventh of it.
In Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, compiled in the 1400s, Elaine is the daughter of Pelles. She becomes Lancelot's lover and Galahad's mother. The name sat inside that story for four centuries without becoming a name English parents actually used.
Alfred Tennyson changed that. In 1859 he published the first four Idylls of the King, and one of them was titled simply Elaine. Behind the Name dates common English use to after that publication, and stops carefully short of calling the poem the cause.
The American record starts in 1880, and it starts small. Federal statisticians logged five girls named Elaine that first year, which is the fewest the agency will print. By 1900 the count had reached fifty.
The climb came in the 1910s. Elaine's share of the girls in the register quadrupled across that decade, a rise the raw counts overstate because the register itself was still filling out. Then the name settled into a long run near the top of the list.
Its peak depends entirely on what you measure. The best rank came in 1938, at number forty-two. The largest single year came in 1947.
That peak year had a face. On 11 December 1947 Elaine Stritch opened at the Coronet Theatre in Angel in the Wings. The revue ran 308 performances and closed the following September.
Then came a long slide. It ran on and off for six decades, and it took the name out of ordinary use.
Where the day itself came from, nobody knows. No founder and no first-observance record turns up for National Elaine Day, and the Federal Register's full text holds no document that names it. What is documented is the observing, not the making.
