Say "Ben Day" to a printer and you will not get a person. You will get a pattern of tiny dots, the Ben-Day process, a halftone shading method invented in 1879 by Benjamin Day, a New York newspaper engraver. National Ben Day, oddly, has nothing to do with him and everything to do with the name they share.

For more than a century, those dots gave flat ink the illusion of shade and tone. That is the strange thing about this particular name. It is a man, a method, a meme, a tribe of the ancient Hebrews, and now a day on the calendar, all at once.

The day is a light celebration of everyone who answers to Ben or Benjamin. It is young and informal. The name it honors is one of the oldest and most stubbornly popular in the language, with a backstory that starts at a deathbed in the book of Genesis.

INTRODUCTION

The Ben on a coffee cup or a class roster is almost never just Ben. The name is a doorway to longer ones, and to two very different roots.

Most often it is short for Benjamin. It also serves as a short form of Benedict and other Ben- names, and in Dutch it can stand in for Bernhard. So a roomful of Bens may not share an origin at all.

CHAPTER 01

Two roots, one nickname

Benjamin runs back to the Hebrew name Binyamin. It joins two words, ben, meaning "son," and yamin, meaning "right hand" or "south." Scholars read it as "son of the right hand" or "son of the south," and both readings are legitimate.

The other road is Latin. Benedict comes from Benedictus, "blessed," and gives English the medieval form Bennett.

So one Ben can mean "son." Another can mean "blessed."

CHAPTER 02

The deathbed naming

The first Benjamin was the twelfth and youngest son of Jacob. His mother, Rachel, died moments after his birth. In her final breath she named the child Ben-oni, "son of my sorrow."

His father gave him another name to carry instead, Benjamin. The boy grew to found one of the southern tribes of the Hebrews, and the name traveled out of scripture and into the wider world.

CHAPTER 03

A day with no recorded author

From there the name spread across centuries, languages, and notable men, which is where National Ben Day picks up. The observance itself has no such pedigree. No primary record names a founder or a founding year for it.

It surfaces only on social posts and holiday-calendar listings. Fittingly for a name this old, it simply appeared without anyone signing it.
