National Anita Day honours a name that has been absent from the Social Security Administration's decade rankings since the 1980s. In Italy it is doing the opposite. Italian parents chose it more often in 2024 than in any other year ISTAT has counted.
The count was 1,100 newborn girls. That put Anita 34th among girls born in Italy that year.
The day itself is an unofficial one. What sits behind it is a name that three governments still administer on paper, one dated slot at a time.
On Rome's Janiculum hill a bronze woman rides at a gallop with a pistol raised in her right hand. A newborn is tied to her chest with a handkerchief. Her left hand grips the horse's mane.
The rider is Anita Garibaldi, whom Brazil's Santa Catarina state archive catalogues under her birth name, Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro. She had given birth to her son Menotti Domingo on 16 September 1840, and imperial soldiers surrounded the house twelve days later. The statue is that escape, and the travertine base beneath it holds her remains.
Anita's other life runs through government paperwork. Sweden's language and folklore agency records the name in the country as early as 1864. Its strongest stretch there covered the 1940s and the decade that followed.
Finland runs its name days through the University of Helsinki's almanac office. That office gave the spelling Anitta a day in 1950. Anita did not join the Finnish-language calendar until 1973, twenty-three years behind it.
Latvia does not inherit its calendar; it votes on it. The State Language Centre runs a Calendar Names Expert Commission that takes public submissions and decides by majority. Of 181 proposals for its traditional list, nine names were admitted.
A separate batch of additions went to the commission's extended list. One of them, Annike, took a place on Anita's own day when the changes came into force at the start of 2026.
National Anita Day has none of that machinery behind it. No founding organisation, year, or reason for its date appears in any record located, and it circulates instead through holiday listing sites and social posts.
That gap is easy to overstate. Even Latvia's official list fills up from public suggestions; the difference is that a committee votes on them.

In Spanish and Portuguese, Anita is a diminutive of Ana that traces back through Anna to the Hebrew Hannah, meaning grace. A separate name, written अनीता in Hindi, Marathi and Nepali and அனிதா in Tamil, comes from an unrelated root.
Ifremer, France's national institute for ocean science, has named its next research vessel after Anita Conti, who joined the launch of the country's first oceanographic ship in 1935. The vessel goes to sea from June 2026 on campaigns in the Channel and the Atlantic.
Rita Moreno won Best Supporting Actress in 1962 for playing Anita in West Side Story, and Ariana DeBose won the same award for the same role sixty years later. NPR reported they were the first pair of women to win Oscars for one character.
