A day missing from IEEE's own calendar

IEEE Global Engineering Day carries the institute's name, and the institute keeps a different day. IEEE Day falls on the first Tuesday in October, and in 2026 that is 6 October.

The institute keeps another annual observance. IEEE WIE Day runs from 23 June to 7 July in 2026. Nothing on that calendar lands in May.

The date is kept anyway, as a tribute to the engineering profession. Whoever put 13 May on the calendar left no name, no announcement and no first year.

ORIGINS

IEEE Global Engineering Day history

INTRODUCTION

In the spring of 1884 a group of industry professionals met in New York. Engineers had harnessed electrical power and connected the world by transatlantic telegraph. They agreed on a goal: they would use their knowledge and influence to benefit humanity.

That October the American Institute of Electrical Engineers held its first meeting, in Philadelphia. Engineering days have been reaching for that idea ever since. The ones with records can also show who put them there.

CHAPTER 01

From two institutes to one

Western Union's president, Norvin Green, took the chair as the Institute's first president, representing the telegraph industry. The field went on to run on two bodies, one for electrical engineers and one for radio.

On 1 January 1963 they merged, and IEEE began life with 150,000 members. Ten years later the IEEE Foundation opened with a board meeting in New York and a promise to fund the institute's outreach.

CHAPTER 02

How a documented engineering day gets made

DiscoverE launched the first annual Global Day of the Engineer in 2016. Four years later it was renamed World Engineering Day, as a joint venture with UNESCO and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations.

WFEO had proposed the day in 2018, during its own 50th-anniversary year, and picked 4 March because that is the date WFEO itself was founded. UNESCO's 40th General Conference followed in November 2019. Marlene Kanga announced the launch at that year's World Engineers Convention.

CHAPTER 03

The day nobody signed

Nothing of that kind exists for 13 May. No IEEE announcement, press release, programme page or campaign site for a Global Engineering Day has been located, and the institute's published calendar of observances does not include it.

Two accounts circulate instead, and they cannot both be right. One credits IEEE with introducing the day in 2019, the other credits the IEEE Foundation with starting it in 2015. Neither carries a source, and the earliest archived calendar listing found was captured in January 2016, already scheduling the day for 13 May, three years before IEEE is supposed to have introduced it.

The American Institute of Electrical Engineers met in October in Philadelphia, with Western Union's president Norvin Green as its first president.

Two institutes become IEEE

On 1 January the AIEE merged with the Institute of Radio Engineers to become the 150,000-member IEEE.

The IEEE Foundation opens

The Foundation began with a board meeting in New York and a promise to sustain funding for IEEE programming and outreach.

Women in Engineering is formalised

IEEE Women in Engineering was formally established on 29 June, and it now keeps an annual observance of its own.

WFEO proposes a world day

The World Federation of Engineering Organizations proposed a World Engineering Day during its 50th-anniversary year.

UNESCO takes up the proposal

The 40th General Conference of UNESCO met in November and set 4 March as World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development.

The day's only published theme belongs to another day

A 2024 news article gave 13 May the theme 'Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow'. That is IEEE Day's October theme, printed on IEEE's own IEEE Day site along with the sentence that follows it.

Edison and Alexander Graham Bell were both AIEE vice presidents

Thomas Alva Edison was a charter member and served as a vice president. Bell was an AIEE vice president in 1884 and president from 1891 to 1892.

The radio engineers organised the year the Titanic sank

IEEE's own history puts the two side by side: in 1912, the Titanic sank, the world listened, and the Institute of Radio Engineers was founded.

America's first woman electrical engineer worked at General Electric

Edith Clarke, an MSEE from MIT, was the first professional woman electrical engineer in America. Her patents included the 1925 Clarke Calculator, and her turbine work shaped hydropower at the Hoover Dam.

IEEE describes itself as a public charity rather than a brand, and ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer lists its New Jersey entity as a 501(c)(3) organisation. The body in the day's name is on a public register; nothing comparable has been found for the day.
