National Andrew Day appears on holiday listings fixed to August 1, and its traces do not run back past 2022. No founder, establishing organisation or reason for the date has been documented.
National Andrew Day celebrates a name in steep retreat in the country that made its owner a patron saint. National Records of Scotland ranks Andrew third among boys' names across the fifty years to 2024. In that same year the name did not appear in the top 100 at all.
The day also sits on the wrong side of the calendar from almost everything else bearing the name. The saint's day is 30 November, written into the statute books of Scotland and Romania. This one lands on 1 August, and the paperwork joining the two is empty.
When a Wisconsin nonprofit decided to mark the occasion in 2023, it interviewed its own policy director, Andrew Kell. Asked when he first heard of August 1 being National Andrew Day, he answered: "Just now, when you told me."
The name reached English by a long route. It began as andreios, a Greek adjective meaning manly, masculine, strong, stubborn, and passed through Late Latin and Old French on the way.
The man who carried it into the Christian calendar was the brother of Peter. Behind the Name records that his Greek name was probably a nickname, or a translation of a Hebrew name that is not known.
Britannica places his death at Patras, in Achaia. A fourth-century account reports a crucifixion. The X-shaped cross now flown as Scotland's flag turns up only in late medieval accretions.
Jerome records that the relics left Patras for Constantinople in 357, on the order of the emperor Constantius II. The body travelled on to Amalfi in 1208, and the head to Rome in the fifteenth century. In September 1964 Pope Paul VI sent that head back to Patras.
Historic Environment Scotland is careful about what happened next. St Rule, it says, is thought to have carried the bones from Patras to Scotland, shipwrecked by a storm on the coast of Fife. In the same telling, the Pictish settlement beside him grew into the town of St Andrews.
The Scottish Flag Trust calls the next part a legend and leaves it there. Before a battle near what is now Athelstaneford, in the year 832AD, a white saltire is said to have appeared above the fighting. The king vowed that if he won with the saint's help, Andrew would be Scotland's patron thereafter.
All of that weight sits on 30 November, where every national name-day calendar checked puts Andrew and never in August. National Andrew Day inherited the name and none of the paperwork. Its own beginning has left no trace of who set the date, or why.

Social Security records show Andrew inside the top 100 US boys' names in every year from 1900 to 2025. Its weakest finish across that entire run was 86th.
NRS chief executive Alison Byrne put the shift plainly: more than 1,700 Scottish boys were called David in 1974, while the 2024 winner, Noah topped the chart with only 366. A name that dominates a modern list would have looked minor fifty years ago.
