A dynamic blend of cultures, this festival has its roots in Caribbean traditions, where music, feathers, sequins, and incredibly intricate floats come together to create an unforgettable experience. Notting Hill Carnival Timeline

Indoor Carnival

The first indoor Notting Hill Carnival was organised by Claudia Jones in response to the racial tensions and riots of 1958.

First Street Carnival

Rhaune Laslett held an outdoor event to promote cultural unity, which established contemporary carnival celebrations in Notting Hill.

Introduction of Sound Systems

Sound Systems, an integral part of the Carnival now, were first introduced enriching the sonic ambience of the festival.

Carnival's Troubled Year

1987 was a difficult year for the Carnival with growing troubles leading to increased police presence in forthcoming events.

Largest Ever Attendance

In 2006, the Notting Hill Carnival set a record with 2 million people attending, making it one of the largest street festivals in the world.

Digital Carnival

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the first time in its history, the Notting Hill Carnival was held virtually.
