In Ireland, Riley is a first name and hardly ever a surname

Ireland registers plenty of Reillys. O'Reilly was the 12th most common surname given to babies born there in 2025, carried by 186 of them. Reilly came 35th, with 115.

Riley is not on that list anywhere. The spelling appears nowhere among the 730 surnames carried by ten or more Irish babies that year. It turns up in the other column instead: 25 boys and 16 girls were given Riley as a first name.

National Riley Day belongs to a name Ireland keeps in one column and not the other. Americans took to the same column, and in volume. The federal name files record 105,025 boys and 141,960 girls given the name since 1880.

Riley Day history

INTRODUCTION

Somewhere in east Lancashire there was a clearing where rye grew. That is where one of the two Rileys comes from: the Old English ryge, rye, and leah, a wood or a clearing, fused into a place name and then into a surname.

The other Riley never had anything to do with rye. It is an anglicised spelling of Ó Raghallaigh, descendant of Raghallach, and the reference that traces it gives Raghallach's own meaning as unknown. Two unrelated families ended up sharing one spelling.

CHAPTER 01

The Lancashire cluster

By the census of 1881, more than a third of Britain's Rileys were living in Lancashire. The concentration sat in the east of the county and spilled over the boundary into Yorkshire's Calder Valley, where the name could be found from the 13th century.

CHAPTER 02

A century as a boys' name

The surname became a first name, and the American files record it from their very first year. Riley is in the 1880 file, given to 41 boys. It stays a boys' name for a long stretch after that, with girls appearing only sporadically until 1973.

By 2002 the two curves had almost met, at 3,959 boys and 3,906 girls. That was the last year the boys were ahead.

The boys' side did not fold at once. Its own best year came in 2006, three years after it had already slipped into second place. Nothing in the record explains the overlap.

CHAPTER 03

A day with no author

The observance has none of that depth behind it. Its author is unrecorded, and the Federal Register returns nothing for the phrase.

An archived holiday listing from August 2022 is the oldest surviving evidence of it anywhere, and what that fixes is when the day was being listed, not when it started. By then the name had already come and gone from its American peak, which makes October 15 a late arrival to a very long story.

Only twelve names have ever topped both American lists

Since 1880, twelve names in the American birth-name files have sat inside the top 100 for boys and the top 100 for girls in the same year. Riley managed it exactly once, in 2002, at 99th among boys and 77th among girls.

B.B. King was born Riley B. King

The blues guitarist was born near Itta Bena, Mississippi, in 1925. He acquired the name the world knows him by later, while working as a disc jockey at the Memphis radio station WDIA.

Riley has not missed a year since records began

The name appears in every one of the 146 American year files from 1880 to 2025. Only 471 of the 45,481 boys' names in that series manage it, roughly one in a hundred.

The 2016 surge landed on one spelling

American girls named Riley rose from 5,739 in 2015 to 7,159 in 2016, the best year the name has had for either sex. Rylee, Ryleigh and Rylie all moved far less, and Pixar's Inside Out, whose lead character is a girl named Riley, had opened in June 2015; no published source connects the film to the figures.

Ireland's published top 100 missed it by one place

Riley's strongest year in Ireland was 2012, when 75 boys were given the name. That put it 101st, a single place outside the ranking Ireland publishes.
