Thomas Edward Knibb of Frederick, Maryland, created the observance in 2003 to defy the superstition that opening an umbrella indoors brings bad luck, encouraging people to test it and observe any consequences. He is also credited with founding National Umbrella Month the same year.
Introduction
March 13 is National Open An Umbrella Indoors Day, a day to celebrate the superstition of opening an umbrella indoors and all that it represents! It's believed that doing so brings with it bad luck. But in reality, this tradition dates back thousands of years and was first observed by Ancient Chinese farmers who used umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun while they worked in their fields. So if you're feeling extra lucky on March 13th, join us in celebrating National Open An Umbrella Indoors Day!
