National Kelly Day has a hinge, and the hinge has a date. The year is 1957. American parents that year gave the name Kelly to 1,903 baby girls.

They gave it to 1,875 baby boys. The margin was 28 births. Boys had held the name in every year the federal registry counted, going back to 1880.

After 1957 they never led again. Most names drift across a generation and leave no clean edge. Kelly has a year.

INTRODUCTION

Before Kelly was a name parents chose, it was a name people inherited. It comes from the Irish Ó Ceallaigh, meaning descendant of Ceallach.

The Dictionary of American Family Names reads Ceallach as an ancient Irish personal name. It began as a byname meaning "bright-headed" and was later understood as "frequenting churches". The same entry notes that several early Irish saints carried it.

CHAPTER 01

A surname counted in every county

Robert E. Matheson built his report on Irish surnames out of the birth index of 1890. Kelly came back second of the hundred principal surnames in Ireland, on an estimated 55,900 people.

Matheson's own entry for the name records it as "Found in every County in Ireland", and thickest in Dublin, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Cork. That is a surname doing what surnames do. It sits still.

CHAPTER 02

Five boys in 1880

The given name did something else. When the United States began counting names in 1880, five American boys were given Kelly. That was enough for rank 995, and the name held a place on the boys' list every year afterward for more than a century.

The girls' list stayed shut for 68 years. Kelly broke into it in 1948. It entered near the bottom, on 83 births.

CHAPTER 03

What the reference books say, and what they hedge

The name reference Behind the Name is direct about what happened next and careful about why. It records the name as "mostly masculine before 1940". The rise for girls, it says, came over the two decades that followed.

It offers two possible causes, hedged as "probably due both to". One is Grace Kelly, who married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956. The other is a female character on the 1957 television series Bachelor Father.

Both of those dates sit at the end of the rise they are offered to explain rather than the start of it. No source shows that either one moved the numbers.

CHAPTER 04

The day itself

National Kelly Day is the newest thing in this story and the thinnest. Its founder, its first observance and its reason for falling on August 26 are all missing from the record, and the Federal Register holds no document under the name. The day rides entirely on the name, which is the part that got written down.

Kelli and Kellie are not the same name as Kelly

The American rankings treat each spelling as its own name, so Kelli and Kellie are tallied apart from Kelly and reached their peaks in different years, in 1970 and 1969 respectively. A name day that gathers all of them together is counting something the statistics deliberately keep apart.

The US registry puts the male peak at 1968, with 3,059 boys named Kelly. That same year 17,138 girls were given it, more than five for every boy.

Not every Kelly is Irish

The Dictionary of American Family Names records separate Scottish origins in Angus, Fife and Aberdeenshire, and an English one from Kelly in Devon, probably from a Cornish word for a small wood.

The two lists last overlapped in 2002

That year 185 American boys and 2,852 American girls were named Kelly. From 2003 the boys' entry simply stops appearing.

The Detroit firm founded in 1946 as Russell Kelly Office Service renamed itself Kelly Girl Service in 1957, then dropped the word when it began placing men and became Kelly Services in 1966.
