INTRO

Jimmy crested in 1944, counted as a name of its own

The Jimmys this day honors are not Jameses in disguise, at least not in the American record. The Social Security Administration builds its name counts from the First Name field on each card application, and its published rules state that different spellings of similar names are not combined. A boy counted as Jimmy had Jimmy written on his own application.

That accounting produces an odd result. Jimmy peaked in 1944. Its rank that year, #41, is the highest the name has ever reached among American boys.

Those were not lean years for the long version. James had reached the top of the boys' list in 1940. It stayed there without a break until 1952.

So the long name and its furthest shortening crested together, inside one registry, counted as strangers.

James arrives in English by a detour. Behind the Name traces it to the Late Latin Iacomus, a variant of the Biblical Latin Iacobus, which came in turn from the Hebrew Yaʿaqov. England had James by the 13th century, and Scotland made it royal.

Shortening came early. Behind the Name calls Jim a medieval diminutive of James, and lists Jimmy among Jim's own diminutives. Jimmy is a shortening of a shortening, two steps down from the name on the certificate.

From a name to a crowbar

Outside the registry the word went to work. The Online Etymology Dictionary records jimmy as a noun for a burglar's crowbar from 1848, borrowed from jemmy, the familiar form of James. The verb, meaning to pry something open, follows in 1893.

CHAPTER 02

Jim reached the registry first

American record-keeping shows the same pecking order. Jim sat at #51 in the 1880s decade table. Jimmy was nowhere in the boys' top 200, and the junior form spent another forty years outside it.

CHAPTER 03

Jimmie led, then lost

For a while the other spelling was winning. The 1920s table counted 14,358 boys as Jimmie against 7,332 as Jimmy. Jimmy passed it in the 1930s and never trailed again.

CHAPTER 04

Into the oath, and out of fashion

The diminutive eventually reached the highest ceremony there is. On January 20, 1977, Chief Justice Warren Burger prompted the words "I, Jimmy Carter do solemnly swear", and the incoming president repeated them back. The White House Historical Association records him as the first president to use a nickname during the swearing in.

By then the name was already sliding, and it had further to fall. National Jimmy Day surfaced later still, and its own beginning is the thinnest part of the whole story, thinner than the etymology of a crowbar.
