Eight years when America registered more Eduardos than Edwards

National Eduardo Day belongs to a name that spent the 2000s level with its own English original, and usually ahead of it. In eight of the nine years from 2001 to 2009, American birth records hold more boys registered as Eduardo than as Edward. Only 2002 broke the run.

The margins were often thin, seven births in 2003 and 446 at the widest. The finding rests on counting exact spellings, and that rule is doing real work. Add the English short forms filed in the same records, Ed, Eddie, Teddy and the rest, and the English side leads in all nine years.

Edward was falling while this happened. Its American peak, 21,126 boys, came in 1924. Its best of those nine years was 2001, at 3,376.

Eduardo Day history

INTRODUCTION

Portugal has its own spelling of this name, and it is not Eduardo. A king born at Viseu on 30 October 1391 carried the Portuguese form of Edward, Duarte. He reigned from 1433 until his death in 1438.

He was known as the philosopher-king and wrote O Leal Conselheiro, The Loyal Counselor. Duarte and Eduardo are one name underneath, built on the same Old English elements as the English Edward.

CHAPTER 01

An English marriage, a Portuguese name

The route the name took into that royal house is one marriage long. In February 1387, John I of Portugal sealed the Anglo-Portuguese alliance by marrying Philippa, daughter of John of Gaunt, duke of Lancaster.

Gaunt was a son of Edward III of England. Behind the Name puts the connection plainly: the Portuguese king was named after his maternal ancestor Edward III.

CHAPTER 02

A day with almost no paperwork

The observance is a far thinner record than the name. No founder, proclamation, or establishing document has been found for National Eduardo Day, and no organisation was found promoting it. No source explains why it sits in July either.

The earliest listing anyone can trace is a holiday-calendar page whose own markup dates its creation to 22 November 2022. Two other major registries have no archived listing for it at all, though their other holiday pages are archived back to 2015 and 2018.

The Federal Register holds no document naming the day. Centuries of paperwork sit behind the name. Almost none of it sits behind the day.

COUNTING

Brazil's biggest count of the name is a floor

Brazil's 2010 census recorded only a person's first given name, so a Brazilian Carlos Eduardo was counted as a Carlos. The 632,664 Eduardos the census found are therefore a floor rather than a total.

FAMILY

The feminine form is barely a generation old

The same census counted 152,299 people named Eduarda, and 111,328 of them were born between 2000 and 2009. Nearly three quarters of the Eduardas the census found came from that one decade.
