National Dan Day

Next celebratedTuesday, August 31, 2027

Everyone called Dan gets the day, whichever name is on their paperwork: Dan means he judged in Hebrew, while the fuller Daniel adds the element for God and means God is my judge.

HOW THE HOLIDAY CAME TO BE

The one date in circulation cannot be supported.

A claim that National Dan Day traces back to 2011 circulates on listing sites, and an attempt to date the first mention through the Wayback index could not support it. No founding record has been identified, and searches of the federal document archives return no proclamation or filing.

Never absent from an American name list since 1880

National Dan Day belongs to a name that American record keepers have never once lost track of. The Social Security Administration publishes a national list of baby names reaching back to 1880. Dan is on all 146 of them.

Popularity is not what kept it there. The name's best year gave it to 3,696 baby boys, against just 78 in 2025.

That combination is the odd thing about Dan. It held a place among the top thousand boys' names in 120 of those years. It last managed that in 2000.

ORIGINS

Dan Day history

INTRODUCTION

Long before any government counted him, Dan was a character in a story. The Book of Genesis has Rachel name the son born to her servant Bilhah, and the Jewish Publication Society translation renders her explanation as "God has vindicated me." Its footnote connects the Hebrew word she uses, dananni, with the name.

That is a verb of judging, and it is where the argument about this name begins. Behind the Name traces it to the Hebrew root din, meaning to judge. The fuller name Daniel takes the same root and adds a second element meaning God.

CHAPTER 01

Two entries for three letters

The reference keeps Dan as two distinct names rather than one. The first is the Hebrew name in its own right, filed under biblical usage. The second is simply the short form of Daniel, recorded across ten European languages from Portuguese to Norwegian.

So the two names do not sit in a single line of descent. In English, Dan is what is left when Daniel is shortened. In Hebrew, Dan is a name in its own right and is not derived from Daniel at all.

CHAPTER 02

What the American files can and cannot see

The files record the name written on the application form and nothing else. A boy entered as Daniel stays Daniel in the data for life, however he is addressed at home. The reverse is equally invisible, because nothing marks a Dan who was always just Dan.

That gap is not a flaw in the counting so much as the limit of what a register is. It knows what was filled in. It has no way of knowing what anyone was called afterwards.

CHAPTER 03

A day nobody has claimed

The observance itself has no such paper trail. A search of the Federal Register for the day's name returns nothing. GovInfo answers the same way.

No founder is on record, and no source explains why the date falls where it does. What is documented is that people mark it, from calendar listings to a short item in a regional Canadian newspaper. Which leaves the day resting on the name rather than on a founding act.

WHY THIS DAY MATTERS

Why We Love National Dan Day

REGISTRY

Two counted under Daniel. The third was born outside the files.

Dan Brown and Dan Fogelberg are on record as Daniel Gerhard Brown and Daniel Grayling Fogelberg, born in New Hampshire and Illinois, so the American files hold them under the longer name. Britannica has Dan Aykroyd born in Ottawa, which leaves him outside those files altogether, whatever his paperwork says.

SPELLING

Four spellings that are never added together

Dan, Daniel, Danny and Danial are counted as four separate names in the American archive, and nothing on this page adds them together. Danial is itself only one of two Latin-alphabet transcriptions of a Persian and Arabic name, and the other one is counted separately again.

SCALE

Durable does not mean popular

Every name in that group has the same perfect attendance, so position inside it measures volume alone. Dan's immediate neighbors by total births are Ezra and Omar, which is not the company a household name keeps.

How to Celebrate National Dan Day

EDITOR'S PICK

Look up the year a Dan was born

The Social Security Administration publishes the full national name list for every birth year in its archive. Search the year a Dan you know was born and see how many boys shared the name.

READ

Read the passage that explains the name

Genesis 30 records Rachel naming the son born to Bilhah and explaining the choice. It takes under a minute to read, and the translation's own footnote points at the Hebrew word behind the name.

ASK

Ask the Dans you know what their paperwork says

Some will be Daniel, some will be Danny, and some will be Dan and nothing else. It is a short question, and the answers rarely all match.

SEND

Send the day to a Danial or a Danny

Both spellings sit in the same American files as Dan, and neither is a misspelling of it. Passing the day along is the simplest way to include them.

INCLUDE

Include the women and girls named Dan

The American files have listed Dan as a girls' name in 72 of the 146 years, first appearing in 1906. Nothing about the day makes it a men's day only.

Test your knowledge

In how many of the 146 annual US name lists does Dan appear?

Answer

No. It is an unofficial observance with no government recognition at any level, so it is a normal working day.
