A 44-year run inside Caroline's 100-year absence

Caroline is the older spelling. Reference books file Carolyn as a variant of it. But for a full century, from 1894-1993, Caroline did not appear once among America's hundred most popular girls' names.

Carolyn spent most of that century on the list Caroline had left. Its run there was unbroken, 1927-1970, forty-four years without a single year out. Nothing in the federal birth files interrupts it.

The day itself carries far less paperwork than the name does. Its beginning is undocumented; the name's record is not. Carolyn has a count attached to every year since 1880.

CHAPTER 01

Eighteen years did most of the work

Carolyn started small. The first federal count found eighty girls with the spelling. Then the 1930s arrived and the line went nearly vertical.

Half of every American Carolyn ever recorded was born inside eighteen years, from 1936-1953. That is 278,566 girls, and it is the shortest run of consecutive years holding half the total. Caroline needs thirty-three years to reach the same halfway mark.

CHAPTER 02

It kept step with Carol, not with Caroline

The reference books file Carolyn under Caroline. The birth record files it beside Carol. Across the year-to-year moves in those files, the two spellings rose or fell together 109 out of 145 times.

The peaks say the same thing. Carol topped out in 1946, and Carolyn the year after. Caroline did not reach its own high until 2000.

None of that makes the spellings rivals. The two curves never fought each other; they sit in different parts of the century. Caroline's own busiest stretch runs from 1987-2019, long after Carolyn's was over.

CHAPTER 03

Where the record stops

All of that is the name. The day is another matter. Its documentation consists of holiday listings and social posts, and stops there.

A search of the Federal Register returns nothing for the phrase. The name, meanwhile, has kept its own record to the last year. Carolyn was still being counted in 2025.

That gap is the honest shape of the day. One half of it is among the best documented things about an American life, counted by a federal agency and published in files anyone can open. The other half turns up each August with nothing behind it but the habit of marking it.

The biggest year was not the best year

Carolyn's only appearance in America's top ten came in 1942, when 19,978 girls got the spelling. Its largest year by births arrived five years later and ranked only fifteenth. The postwar surge lifted every name at once, so more Carolyns bought a worse place.

185 American girls were named Carolyn in 2025. Inside the 1880-2025 window covered by the federal files, the last year the count sat that low or lower was 1907. Coverage before about 1910 is thin, which makes the comparison a conservative one rather than an inflated one.

Boys were named Carolyn too

The boys' files carry the spelling in 71 separate years, 1,620 births in all, peaking in 1943. She took a bachelor's and a master's at Chico State College, where she studied history, political science and English literature. She taught school for a year, then raised three children. She began hunting comets with her husband after the children left home. By 1994 she had 32 comet discoveries to her credit, more than anyone alive at the time.

Carolyn Porco, at Saturn

The Planetary Society's profile describes her as leader of the Cassini Imaging Science team and a UC Berkeley visiting scholar, working on planetary ring and moon interactions and the geysers of Enceladus. It records her among TIME's 12 Most Influential People in Space in 2012.

Carolyn Davidson, and a 35 dollar logo

She was a graphic design student at Portland State when Phil Knight, teaching accounting there, asked for a shoe stripe. She handed him five drawings. He picked the Swoosh and said 'I don't love it, but it will grow on me', then paid her 35 dollars.

Carolyn Keene, who is a pen name

The byline on every Nancy Drew mystery belongs to a method, not a woman. The Stratemeyer Syndicate wrote outlines and hired ghostwriters to fill them in; the first was Mildred Benson, and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams later became the main writer under the name. The syndicate's own site puts it plainly: telling people there is no Carolyn Keene is a bit like telling them there is no tooth fairy.
