A one-letter difference with an election-year surge

Bryan was a rare American first name for most of the nineteenth century. Then came 1896. Social Security's files counted 157 boys given the name that year, against 27 the year before.

That summer William Jennings Bryan took the Democratic presidential nomination in Chicago, on the fifth ballot. He then stumped the country, covering 18,000 miles in three months. The name's rank that year, #116 among American boys, would stand as its high-water mark for the next sixty-one years.

National Bryan Day belongs to the men and boys who got the y. That letter is not a rounding error. Bryan reached the federal record twenty-six years ahead of Brian, and the two spellings have never behaved like one name.

INTRODUCTION

Bryan is not a stylistic drift away from Brian. It is the surname's spelling. Behind the Name gives the whole entry in one line: a variant of Brian, based on the usual spelling of the surname derived from that name.

The Bryan on the county map

William Joel Bryan was a nephew of Stephen F. Austin. He handed the Houston and Texas Central Railroad the land for a townsite in Brazos County. Bryan, Texas took his name, became the county seat, and now sits beside Texas A&M University.

Oklahoma did the same for a different Bryan. Its Bryan County is named for William Jennings Bryan, whom the state's own encyclopedia records as a contributor to the 1907 Oklahoma Constitution.

CHAPTER 02

Two names, one ledger

The federal government has never let the two spellings blur. The Social Security Administration does not combine different spellings of similar names, and each keeps its own rank. Bryan and Brian have been counted apart for as long as the series has run.

For a long stretch there was nothing to compare. Brian does not appear in the national files until 1909. It did not outnumber Bryan until 1933, and then it led for seventy-three straight years.

CHAPTER 03

The gap closes

The two peaks came far apart. Brian topped out in 1972, while Bryan did not reach its own high until 1985. The y-spelling never entered the top 40 in any year of the series.

National Bryan Day carries none of that behind it. No founder, no first observance, and no establishing record has been identified for the day itself. What it does have is the ledger underneath it, which is longer and stranger than the holiday.
