HOW THE HOLIDAY CAME TO BE

The state that ordered it kept the record.

The day marks the death of Guru Arjan in Mughal custody at Lahore, an execution the emperor Jahangir recorded ordering in his own memoirs. No account of when Sikhs first kept the anniversary has been identified, and its place on 16 June comes from the Nanakshahi calendar rather than from any founding act.

INTRO

Amritsar and Lahore mourned him twenty-four days apart

In 2023 the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee marked the Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji on 23 May. Twenty-four days later, in Lahore, the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee marked it again. Same martyrdom, same year, two days of mourning.

The gap is not a scheduling accident. It is two calendars. The mool Nanakshahi calendar pins the anniversary to 16 June and never moves it, while the amended version the SGPC follows lets the date drift, and in 2024 the two observances fell six days apart.

In 2026 the drift ran the other way. Sikhs from both countries kept the day together at Lahore on 16 June, the first joint observance in fourteen years. Chandigarh's public holiday fell two days later, on 18 June.

Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji history

INTRODUCTION

Prince Khusrau escaped Agra on 6 April 1606 and rode for the Punjab in rebellion against his father. Somewhere on that road he halted where the Sikhs' fifth Guru was living. That halt is why this day sits on the calendar.

Emperor Jahangir's memoirs say the Guru made on the prince's forehead "a finger-mark in saffron". Father Jerome Xavier, a Jesuit at the Mughal court, wrote that the Guru "congratulated him on his new royalty, and placed his tiara on his head". Two contemporary records, and they already disagree.

CHAPTER 01

The order, in the emperor's own hand

Jahangir's account of what he did next is unusually direct. He ordered the man produced, handed his houses and children to Murtaza Khan, and "having confiscated his property commanded that he should be put to death".

The passage gives him no religion of his own. It calls him "a Hindu named Arjun" and notes that "They called him Guru", and it records a confiscation rather than a fine.

CHAPTER 02

The records disagree about how he died

Xavier's letter, sent from Lahore on 25 September 1606, has the Guru buying his freedom for a hundred thousand crusados, then stripped of everything and starved until "at last the poor man died".

The Dabistan-i-Mazahib, a Persian survey of religions compiled about forty years later, has him tied up outside Lahore, dying "owing to the strong sun, summer heat and the injuries inflicted by the collectors". Britannica says he was tortured to death after refusing to cut passages from the Adi Granth.

CHAPTER 03

Whom Sikhs blamed

The version that shaped Sikh memory arrived much later. In 1741 the Mahima Prakash Vartak set down an account from collective memory in which Chandu Shah, a Khatri official cast as the Guru's enemy, presses the fine and takes the body.

Pashaura Singh writes that in it "Emperor Jahangir was literally absolved of any role in the Guru's death", and that the version dominated Sikh sources until the nineteenth century.

CHAPTER 04

Then a calendar split the day

No account survives of when Sikhs first kept the anniversary, but its modern date has an author. Pal Singh Purewal, a Canada-based Sikh, built the Nanakshahi calendar the SGPC adopted in 2003 after Akal Takht approval, and it fixed the day at 16 June.

Seven years later the SGPC amended his calendar and returned the gurpurab to lunar reckoning. Pakistan's committee kept the original. Purewal died in 2022, at 90.

PILGRIMAGE

Pakistan issued 962 visas. The SGPC asked for none.

In 2024 the Pakistan High Commission issued 962 visas for the anniversary and the SGPC sent no requests at all, because Pakistan grants the visas on its own calendar's date. About 846 Sikhs travelled anyway through other organisations, crossing at Attari-Wagah on 8 June.

SCRIPTURE

The man the day mourns assembled the scripture

Of the 5,894 hymns the SGPC counts in the Guru Granth Sahib, 2,218 are Guru Arjan's. That is more than double the next largest share, the 974 credited to Guru Nanak.

AFTERMATH

Historians treat the death as a turning point

Britannica writes that from that time the Sikhs, expecting further persecution by Mughal rulers, became more militaristic. Pashaura Singh's study calls the martyrdom the single most decisive factor for the crystallization of the Sikh Panth.

He took over the Sikh community from his father, Guru Ram Das, and led it for the rest of his life.

The Adi Granth is installed

Guru Arjan placed the scripture in Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar and appointed Baba Buddha its first Granthi.

Death in Mughal custody

After Prince Khusrau's visit, Jahangir ordered the Guru's property confiscated, his family handed to Murtaza Khan, and his death commanded.

A Sikh account blames Chandu Shah

The Mahima Prakash Vartak set down a version drawn from collective memory that blamed Chandu Shah rather than the emperor.

The Nanakshahi calendar arrives

The SGPC adopted Pal Singh Purewal's calendar after Akal Takht approval, fixing the martyrdom day at 16 June.

The SGPC amends the calendar

The amendment returned the gurpurab to lunar reckoning, and the Indian and Pakistani dates have parted company since.

At Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore the anniversary is kept with akhand paths, the unbroken reading of the whole scripture, and ragi groups performing gurbani kirtan. Sit through part of a reading wherever you are.

Set out or join a chhabeel

A chhabeel is a free stall of iced sweet water, and Sikh organisations put them up across cities and towns around the anniversary. In 2026 the Punjab Police ran one outside its own headquarters, with the state's director general of police serving passers-by.
