No founder, proclamation, registry entry or organising body has been located for National Sofia Day, and no source documents why it falls on May 30. The earliest archived trace of it anywhere is a holiday-listing page captured on 6 December 2022.
A capital took the name first
Bulgaria's capital is named for the ancient Basilica of Saint Sophia at its centre, which Sofia Municipality describes as one of the oldest functioning churches in Europe. The church is still there, in the middle of the modern city, and the city's own holiday is built around it.
