INTRO

Sofia's other day is written into municipal law

A Sofia Day already exists. Bulgaria's capital has kept one every 17 September since its municipal council voted for the date, and the city marks it with a flag-raising in front of the Church of St Sophia. National Sofia Day is not that day.

The May observance has no council behind it, and no founder. What it has is the name, which stands higher in the American record than it ever has.

It is an odd split. The name is documented almost everywhere. The day attached to it is documented almost nowhere.

Sofia Day history

INTRODUCTION

Sofia arrived in the American record without ceremony. The Social Security Administration's national data lists six girls given the name in 1881, the first year it appears at all.

The climb after that took more than a century. For most of it, the name belonged somewhere else.

CHAPTER 01

A capital took the name first

Bulgaria's capital is named for the ancient Basilica of Saint Sophia at its centre, which Sofia Municipality describes as one of the oldest functioning churches in Europe. The church is still there, in the middle of the modern city, and the city's own holiday is built around it.

CHAPTER 02

A council vote in March 1992

On 25 March 1992 the Sofia Municipal Council adopted a resolution making 17 September the holiday of the capital. Bulgaria's national news agency kept its own bulletin from the day of the vote.

The first Sofia Day came that September. Priests from 34 churches across the capital blessed a new city flag in a service in front of the Saint Sophia Church, and the flags of Bulgaria, Sofia and the Council of Europe were raised in front of the basilica.

Mayor Alexander Yanchulev spoke at the ceremony. "On the first Christian celebration of our capital, we bless Sofia's new flag, blue like the sky above us, a symbol of freedom, democracy and united Europe, of which we are now a part," he said.

The form of the day was fixed later. Under the Regulation on the Symbols and Honours of Sofia Municipality, adopted in 2007, the council meets in ceremonial session on Sofia Day and presents the city's highest honours.

CHAPTER 03

The day with no paperwork

National Sofia Day has none of that. No founder, proclamation, registry entry or organising body has been found for it, and no source explains the date it uses.

What it has is a trail that starts recently. The earliest archived trace of the day anywhere is a holiday-listing page captured on 6 December 2022. A second major listing site, whose page for another holiday is archived back to March 2018, has no Sofia day in the Internet Archive's record at all.

The name reaches 97th, its first appearance inside the hundred most common. That year 3,488 American girls are given it.

The city writes down the ritual

Sofia Municipality's Regulation on the Symbols and Honours sets the form of the day. The council meets in ceremonial session and presents the city's highest honours.

The name's biggest American year

9,702 girls are named Sofia. It is the highest annual count anywhere in the record.

Surprising facts about National Sofia Day

Its best rank came with fewer babies

8,252 American girls were named Sofia in 2025, the year the name reached ninth. In its biggest year, 2015, more girls were given it and it ranked only 14th.

In Italy it tops two lists at once

ISTAT reports that among girls born to foreign parents resident in Italy, as among Italian ones, Sofia is the most popular name, followed by Sara and Amira.

A blank year does not mean nobody

Sofia appears in 141 of the 146 annual American files. It is missing from 1880 and from 1882 to 1885 because the agency withholds any name with fewer than five occurrences.

A Sofja held the first chair in mathematics

Sonja Kovalevsky, born Sofja Krjukovsky in Moscow on 15 January 1850, was appointed a full professor at Stockholm University College in 1889. Stockholm University calls her the world's first female professor of mathematics.

Sweden's state universities waited until 1938

Her appointment was possible only because Stockholm University College was a private foundation. Swedish state institutions did not appoint a woman as professor until then, when Nanna Svartz was appointed at the Karolinska Institutet.
