HOW THE HOLIDAY CAME TO BE

A brand campaign Minted launched on its 15th anniversary.

Minted, the San Francisco premium design-goods marketplace, founded the first annual Independent Artist Day on April 3, 2022, to mark its 15th anniversary and honor the independent artists in its creator community. Founder and co-CEO Mariam Naficy launched the day, saying the company decided to create it to celebrate the vision and courage of independent artists and designers. Minted filed a federal trademark application for the name on March 16, 2022, weeks before the first observance; the application was never registered, which is why the mark carries a trademark symbol rather than a registered symbol.

INTRO

The day that was trademarked before it was ever celebrated

The paperwork came first. On March 16, 2022, the design marketplace Minted filed a federal trademark application for the words "INDEPENDENT ARTIST DAY." The first actual observance was eighteen days later, on April 3.

So this is not a grassroots holiday that a company later adopted. It is a brand asset that existed on a government form before anyone celebrated it.

The application never registered. It still sits at the status a clerk assigns the moment a filing arrives, never handed to an examiner. That is why the name carries a small "™" and not the circled "®" of a granted mark. The symbol is honest: it is a common-law claim on a day that was named, and owned, before it was kept.

ORIGINS

Independent Artist Day™ history

INTRODUCTION

Independent Artist Day belongs to one company, and that company has a clear reason for it. To see why a design marketplace would invent a holiday, start with what "independent artist" has come to mean, because the term is slipperier than it sounds.

CHAPTER 01

What "independent" actually means

In music, an independent release is simply one not funded or owned by the three majors: Universal, Sony, and Warner. That covers everything from small indie labels to artists who upload their own tracks and keep the rights. In visual art and design, an independent artist is one working outside the big institutions and galleries. The word describes a spectrum, not a single tidy category.

CHAPTER 02

The line is blurrier than the label

The most-cited "independent" success stories test that definition. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took "Thrift Shop" to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013 with no record deal. NPR's Planet Money checked the story and found the duo "say they rose to the top without a label. That's not entirely true," because they paid Warner's Alternative Distribution Alliance to distribute the song and Warner to push it to radio. Independence, in practice, is a dial.

CHAPTER 03

A marketplace built on the idea

Minted was built to sit on the cleaner end of that dial. Mariam Naficy launched it in 2007 as a crowdsourced marketplace, running open design challenges where customers vote and the winning artist is paid a commission. The model is a concrete form of independent-artist support, and it gave the company a community to celebrate.

CHAPTER 04

Fifteen years in, a holiday

On April 3, 2022, Minted turned its 15th anniversary into a day. It announced the first Independent Artist Day to honor the creators it works with, paired with a site-wide discount. By the fifth annual edition in 2026, under co-founder and CEO Melissa Kim, the campaign had been reframed around human creativity in an AI-driven world.

TIMELINE

Timeline

Minted is founded

Mariam Naficy launches Minted as a crowdsourced design marketplace that pays winning independent artists a commission.

A streaming-only Grammy first

Chance the Rapper's label-free 'Coloring Book' wins Best Rap Album, the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy.

Minted files the trademark

On March 16, Minted submits a federal trademark application for 'INDEPENDENT ARTIST DAY' in International Class 041.

The first observance

On April 3, Minted holds the first Independent Artist Day, tied to its 15th anniversary, with a community then numbering 16,000-plus artists.

Independents take a bigger slice

MIDiA Research reports non-major labels grew to 29.7 percent of the total recorded-music market, the third straight year of gains.

The fifth annual, AI edition

Minted marks the fifth Independent Artist Day, now centered on human creativity versus AI, with 20,000-plus artists across 120 countries.

WHY THIS DAY MATTERS

Why We Love Independent Artist Day™

ECONOMY

Nearly a third of the recorded-music market is now non-major.

Non-major labels grew their share of the total recorded-music market to 29.7 percent in 2024, the third straight year of gains, per MIDiA Research. Measured by who owns the rights rather than who distributes, MIDiA put the non-major share even higher, at 46.7 percent in 2023.

WORKFORCE

Self-releasing artists are their own segment

MIDiA's "Artists Direct" category, made up of musicians self-releasing through services like DistroKid and TuneCore, earned $2.0 billion in 2024. There are now roughly 8.2 million self-releasing artists worldwide, a workforce the day is built to recognize.

COMMUNITY

A marketplace turned its creators into the occasion

Minted ties the day to its own crowdsourced model, which it says reached a community of more than 20,000 independent artists across 120 countries by 2026. The day gives that community a fixed annual moment of attention, framed around the value of human creativity.

GOOD TO KNOW

Surprising facts about Independent Artist Day™

The trademark was filed before the first celebration

Minted submitted USPTO application Serial No. 97314591 for "INDEPENDENT ARTIST DAY" on March 16, 2022, listing it under "conferences celebrating original works." The day itself was first observed eighteen days later.

It never became a registered trademark

The application has never moved past its intake status, "New Application," and was never assigned to an examiner. The mark is a common-law claim, which is why it appears with a trademark symbol rather than a registered one.

An independent album once made Grammy history

Chance the Rapper released "Coloring Book" in 2016 with no record label and gave the music away for free. It became the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy, taking Best Rap Album in 2017.

Most independent tracks are barely heard

Roughly 99,000 new tracks were uploaded to streaming services every day in 2024, per Luminate, down from a daily average of about 103,500 in 2023. The vast majority go largely unheard.

There is a companion mark, too

Minted filed a second, related application the same day for "MINTED INDEPENDENT ARTIST DAY," Serial No. 97314596. Like the first, it is part of the same family and is not a confirmed registration.

Inspired by them, we decided to create Independent Artists Day, which celebrates the vision and courage of all independent artists and designers and their impact on our lives.

Common Misconceptions

The myth

Independent Artist Day is an official or grassroots national day.

The truth

It is a brand campaign created by Minted, a for-profit company, to mark its own 15th anniversary in 2022. No government or grassroots body established it.

The myth

The trademark symbol means the name is a registered trademark.

The truth

Minted's application was filed but never registered, sitting at the "New Application" intake status. The symbol signals a common-law claim, not a granted, registered mark.

The myth

An "independent" artist has no major-label involvement at all.

The truth

Independence is a spectrum. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis topped the charts as an independent act, yet still hired Warner's distribution arm and Warner radio promotion for "Thrift Shop."

How to Celebrate Independent Artist Day™

EDITOR'S PICK

Buy directly from an independent artist

Spend on work bought straight from the maker, whether a print, a piece of music, or a design. Money that skips the middleman is the most concrete way to back independence.

READ

Read the founding announcement

Spend a few minutes with Minted's 2022 press release that launched the day. It is the clearest record of who created the observance and why.

SHARE

Share an artist's own channels

Pass along an independent artist's website, shop, or streaming page rather than a repost. Pointing people to where the artist actually earns helps more than a like.

LEARN

Learn how the marketplace model works

Look at how a crowdsourced platform pays its winning artists a commission through open design challenges. Understanding the mechanics shows what supporting an independent creator can actually look like.

CHAMPION

Champion human creativity in your own work

The 2026 edition centered on human creativity in an AI-driven world. Commissioning or crediting a real person, rather than defaulting to a generator, fits that framing.
