The 101st U.S. Congress passed H.J. Res. 652, signed into law by President George H. W. Bush as Public Law 101-564 on November 15, 1990, designating March 25, 1991, as National Medal of Honor Day. It was created to honor recipients' heroism and commemorate the first awards given on March 25, 1863.
Introduction
Honor and recognize the brave men and women who have served our country on National Medal of Honor Day, March 25. This special day was created in 1990 to recognize those individuals who have been awarded the highest military honor for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty." Since its inception, this national holiday has become a time for people across America to come together to pay tribute to these heroes.
