National Lori Day

Next celebratedSaturday, November 7, 2026

INTRO

Why a nickname outranked the name it is said to shorten

National Lori Day lands on a name the reference books cannot agree about. They differ on what Lori shortens, and on whether shortening is even the right word. What they do agree on is that Laura belongs somewhere in the answer.

Across the 1960s the Social Security Administration counted 176,560 American girls named Lori. It counted 174,185 named Laura. The nickname finished the decade one rank above the name it was supposedly borrowed from.

That gap is not a filing artifact. Lori stood in the federal ledger as a name in its own right, never as Laura's overflow. For ten years it was simply the bigger one.

ORIGINS

Lori Day history

INTRODUCTION

Ask where Lori comes from and you get two answers that have nothing to do with each other. Both are respectable. Neither has won.

The candidates are Laura and Lorraine. They agree for three letters and then part company completely.

CHAPTER 01

A shrub and a kingdom

Laura comes from the Latin laurus, meaning laurel. In ancient Rome the leaves of that tree were woven into the garlands handed to victors. English speakers had taken the name up by the 13th century.

It carried some hard history with it. One 9th-century bearer, Saint Laura, was a Spanish nun who died thrown into a vat of molten lead. Another was the subject of the poems of Petrarch.

Lorraine has no plant in it at all. It is a region of eastern France, and the name means kingdom of Lothar, after a Frankish king who was Charlemagne's great-grandson. It entered English as a given name in the late 19th century and rose after the First World War, while France and Germany were contesting the region itself.

CHAPTER 02

Diminutive, or variant?

The disagreement is not only about which parent. It is about what kind of thing Lori is.

Behind the Name calls it a diminutive of Laura, Lorraine and other names beginning with Lor, which leaves the class open at the end. Wikipedia calls it a variant of Laura and Lorraine, which closes it to two and makes Lori a name rather than a pet form.

The same fog sits one step sideways. Laurie, its nearest relative, is filed as a diminutive of either Laura or Laurence, so it cannot settle even on the sex of its parent.

CHAPTER 03

The day itself

National Lori Day falls on November 7, and the paperwork behind it is thin. No founder is on record, and no source gives a reason for the date.

What it has instead is people. In 2024 the date drew posts from women named Lori, which is where an observance like this one actually lives.

WHY THIS DAY MATTERS

Why We Love National Lori Day

COUNTING

Four spellings, four names, four separate ranks.

The Social Security Administration states plainly that different spellings of similar names are never combined, and that each keeps its own rank. That rule is why Lori, Laurie, Laura and Lorraine sit in the national data as four separate names rather than one name with four coats.

CALENDAR

Lori and Laura keep different days

National Lori Day is marked on November 7, while National Laura Day falls on December 23 and National Lauren Day on October 22. The calendar splits them the same way the registries do, without anyone coordinating the two.

OBSERVANCE

The day is kept by the people it names

There is no sponsoring organisation behind National Lori Day, no registrar and no campaign account promoting it. The date has no institutional owner, so nothing holds it on the calendar except the people who use it.

GOOD TO KNOW

National Lori Day Around the World

Canada

ranked from 1955 to 1981, a run of 27 years against America's 56; its best position was number 18, reached in 1961 and again in 1963, when 909 Canadian girls were registered Lori

England and Wales

barely registered at all: across the thirty years of available data, beginning in 1996, Lori ranked in only five, never rising above number 643 and disappearing after 2000

GET INVOLVED

How to Celebrate National Lori Day

EDITOR'S PICK

Ask a Lori what is on her birth certificate

The reference books cannot settle whether Lori is a name or a shortening, but the woman in front of you can settle her own case. It is a better opening question than happy name day.

LOOK

Look the name up in the federal records

The Social Security Administration publishes its decade-by-decade name tables free to the public. Find the year a Lori you know was born and see where she landed.

SEND

Send the note you keep meaning to send

A name day is a low-stakes excuse to contact someone you have not spoken to in a while. November 7 does the work of picking the date for you.

GATHER

Gather the Loris in one room

The name clustered hard into a single generation, so the Loris you know are likely close in age. That makes a shared table on November 7 easier to arrange than it sounds.

PICK

Pick the version you believe

The evidence does not settle whether Lori descends from Laura or from Lorraine, so the choice is honestly yours to make. Read both entries and decide which one you would write on a card.

Test your knowledge

How well do you know National Lori Day?

1 / 8

Across the 1960s, which name did more American girls receive?

Answer

No. It is an unofficial observance with no legal standing found, so it is a normal working day.
