National Karen Day is a name day, and the name it marks is not a small one. Over the last hundred years, 986,098 girls born in the United States were given it. That is ninth place on the Social Security Administration's ranking of the most common American girls' names since 1926.
Almost none of them chose it. A name is handed over before its owner can weigh in, which is worth remembering on a day built around one.
The name is also much older than the day. It has travelled further than English-speaking readers tend to assume.
Every Karen is, at some remove, a Katherine. The name descends from the Greek Aikaterine, carried by Saint Katherine of Alexandria, and is generally traced to the Greek word katharos, meaning pure. The short form came much later, and from much further north.
How a Greek saint's name turned into a Danish nickname, and then into one of the most-given names in American history, is mostly a question of shortening. Long names rarely survive contact with daily speech intact.
The long form put down roots in one language after another. France had Catherine, Spain Catalina, Poland Katarzyna, Hungary Katalin, Finland Kaarina. Scandinavia went further and trimmed it: Swedish and Norwegian settled on Karin, and Danish on Karen.
In American English the name was rare before 1928. Three decades later it was everywhere. Karen then held a place among the five most popular girls' names in the United States for ten straight years, a run that began in 1957.
Its best year was 1965, when it ranked third. The run ended the year after that. Karen is now absent from the two hundred most popular American girls' names for births since 2020.
The day itself has nothing like that record. Searches for an originating person, campaign, filing, or proclamation return nothing at all. The only peer reviewed study of the name and the people who carry it, published in 2025, never mentions the day at all.
What the day has instead is use. It arrives each year because people mark it, not because anyone is on record as having established it.

A study in Names: A Journal of Onomastics surveyed 681 people who carry the name, and more than three quarters of them reported being laughed at over it sometimes or frequently.
For a day with no founder, the evidence it exists at all is use. The Manchester Evening News marked the day on June 8 in 2025, then marked it again on the same date the following year.
Karens United for Respect is a registered 501(c)(3) in the United States that grew out of a support group for people being name-shamed. It argues that a person's name merits the same respect as any other part of their identity.
