No founder, proclamation or establishing record for National Juan Day has been located, and the date's own history sits outside the observance: September 13 is one of 27 name days Spain gives to Juan, and it is the Western feast of St John Chrysostom. Nothing in the record connects those facts to this day, and the one holiday-listing site carrying a National Juan Day places it on November 16 instead, on a page the Internet Archive has never captured even though the same site's other day pages are archived from 2016.

INTRO

Byron's rhymes will not let you say it in Spanish

National Juan Day marks a name that two languages refuse to say the same way. Byron built the English side of it into rhyme.

The opening stanza of his satiric poem Don Juan sets the name against "a new one" and "the true one," so the rhyme closes only if the reader says JOO-un rather than the Spanish hwan: "The age discovers he is not the true one; / Of such as these I should not care to vaunt, / I'll therefore take our ancient friend Don Juan."

Two more stanzas in the same poem do it again. The day belongs to both readings of the name.

CHAPTER 01

The man who never was

Don Juan is easy to mistake for a historical person. He was not one. Britannica files him as a "fictitious character who is a symbol of libertinism," a figure who began in popular legend and was only "first given literary personality" in 1630, in the tragic drama El burlador de Sevilla.

Note the hedge in that sentence. Even the authorship is careful: the play is attributed to Tirso de Molina, not credited to him outright.

CHAPTER 02

How a Spanish name learned an English sound

The story travelled before the poem did. In the 1600s it reached strolling Italian players, and some of them took it into France in their pantomime repertoire.

Byron's own first stanza ends "We all have seen him, in the pantomime." What he added was the sound. His rhymes hold the name to an English reading and never let go.

One stanza pairs it with "quite the same none" and "for my new one." Another rhymes "little Juan" against "the true one." A single instance would be a convenience.

Three is a decision.

CHAPTER 03

The saint who already had the date

The date was spoken for centuries earlier. September 13 is the Western feast of St John Chrysostom, the archbishop of Constantinople who died in 407.

His Greek surname meant "golden-mouthed." The Eastern church keeps him on November 13 instead, so the same man is honoured on two different days by two traditions.

National Juan Day itself has no such paperwork. No founder, no first observance and no establishing document has been found for it.

The date it landed on is genuinely one of Juan's name days in Spain, and the saint whose feast it is bears the same name in another language. No source ties either fact to the making of this holiday. They are true things standing next to each other, which is not the same as a reason.

El burlador de Sevilla, attributed to Tirso de Molina, first gave the Don Juan legend a literary personality.

Mozart makes it permanent

Don Giovanni gave the story the enduring popularity that no play had managed on its own.

Byron starts publishing

Shaw brings the character back
