A sleeping man with a tree growing out of him

National Jesse Day belongs to a name that European artists were drawing for centuries before English parents began giving it to their children. The picture is unmistakable once you know it. A man lies asleep on his back, and a tree grows out of his side.

Dorchester Abbey in Oxfordshire still has one, built as tracery, sculpture and stained glass at once, with Jesse apparently dozing on the windowsill at the foot of his own tree. It is 14th century work. English speakers did not begin using Jesse as a given name until after the Protestant Reformation, generations later.

So the image was in the wall before the name was on the children. The observance is thinner than the name behind it: nobody has claimed authorship, and no source explains the date. The name itself, though, is documented year by year for more than a century.

INTRODUCTION

The name starts in one verse. Isaiah 11:1 promises that a shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse, and that a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The King James Bible calls it a rod out of the stem of Jesse, which is where the English name for the picture comes from.

Jesse himself is named in the Hebrew Bible as the father of King David. Because the Gospels trace Jesus back through David, artists could draw the entire descent as a single tree and name it after the man at the root.

CHAPTER 01

Glass that outlived the fire

Chartres Cathedral put its Jesse window into the west front around 1145. In 1194 a fire destroyed the cathedral standing around it. Four windows survived, and the Tree of Jesse was one of them.

The image traveled well. A workshop in Swabia made one late in the 1200s that now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, six stacked panels running nearly 13 feet from bottom to top. Jesse sleeps at the bottom, King David holds a harp in the roundel just above him, and the trunk climbs until it seems to merge with the wood of the cross.

CHAPTER 02

Two spellings, counted apart

American records draw a line the eye tends to blur. Federal name data never merges different spellings, so Jesse and Jessie are two separate names with two separate histories. Jessie ran in both the boys' and the girls' columns for decades, while Jesse stayed in one.

The Social Security Administration's decade tables open in the 1880s with Jesse ranked 28th among boys. That was the start of a slide across nine consecutive decades. It bottomed out at 142nd in the 1960s.

Then it turned. The 1980s put Jesse back at 49th, its strongest decade showing since the 1890s. Underneath the ranking, something stranger had happened.

In 1887 the name reached 26th, its highest US rank on record. That year 0.550 percent of American boys were named Jesse. Nearly a century later the share was higher, 0.561 percent, yet the rank had fallen to 37th.

CHAPTER 03

A June date nobody signed

The slide resumed after the 1990s, and by the 2020s Jesse had reached 195th, its lowest decade rank in the whole series. The June observance runs against that backdrop. Who put it there is not recorded.

People keep it anyway. In 2025 a group home organization posted a public greeting for a resident named Jesse, which is about as close to a founding document as this day has.

The Jesse Tree never stayed in the windows, and families keep it now as an Advent countdown, adding one ornament and one reading a day from Genesis to the Nativity. An apple stands for Adam and Eve, a rainbow for Noah, a ladder for Jacob.
