National Jerry Day

Next celebratedFriday, July 16, 2027

Jerry outranks the name it is supposed to shorten: 167,257 American boys in the 1940s against Gerald's 103,342. July 16 is the day for a nickname that four separate names, in three languages, can claim.

INTRO

A nickname ranked seven places above its own parent

National Jerry Day honours a nickname that outranks the name it stands for. The Social Security Administration lists Jerry nineteenth among American boys born in the 1940s. Gerald, which Jerry is usually said to shorten, comes twenty-sixth.

The counts behind those two ranks are not close. Jerry has 167,257 boys in that decade. Gerald has 103,342.

Jerry does not belong to Gerald alone either. Behind the Name files it as a diminutive of four separate names, and those four come from three unrelated languages. Two people celebrating together may share a nickname and nothing else on paper.

ORIGINS

Jerry Day history

INTRODUCTION

Ask what Jerry is short for and the honest answer is that it depends on the family. The reference works do not narrow it to one name. The American records cannot settle it either, because they log only what was written on the card.

The one thing the record does fix is where those candidates came from. Gerald, Jerome, Jeremy and Geraldine each reached English by a different route.

CHAPTER 01

A spear, a saint, and a prophet

Gerald is Germanic, glossed by Behind the Name as power of the spear. The Normans carried it into Britain. It then died out in England through the Middle Ages, survived in Ireland, and returned across the English-speaking world only in the 1800s.

Jerome came by a different road. It is the Greek Hieronymos, meaning sacred name, and England has used it since the 12th century. Jeremy is different again, the English form of the Hebrew Jeremiah.

CHAPTER 02

The one name with an author

Geraldine is the exception in this family. The poet Henry Howard made it for a 1537 sonnet, inventing a name so that he could call Lady Elizabeth FitzGerald The Geraldine. The other three were carried into English by migration and by scripture, not by a poet.

CHAPTER 03

Where the nickname overtook the name

American name records open in 1880, and they open with Jerry in front. That first year lists 136 boys named Jerry. Gerald appears eleven times in the same file.

Gerald then ran ahead of Jerry for a generation, and the two drew level again in 1935. Gerald took that year by six births. It has not led since, and Jerry's own best year came in 1947.

CHAPTER 04

The day itself

The observance is the thinnest part of this record. Who set National Jerry Day on July 16, and in what year, is not written down anywhere this page could open. It is kept anyway, which for a nickname whose formal names have nothing in common may be the only arrangement that fits.

WHY THIS DAY MATTERS

Why We Love National Jerry Day

PERSISTENCE

A 1940s name that has never once left the list

Jerry reads as a mid-century American name, and 262 boys were still given it in 2025. Behind the Name files it among the names never out of the US top 1,000, and every year on federal record bears that out.

REACH

It spreads without an organiser

The clearest observance this page could verify came from an alumni association in Mauritius, which posted the day on July 16, 2024, and described it as international. No sponsoring organisation, registrar or campaign was found behind it, there or anywhere else.

RECORD

The federal paperwork is empty

A full-text search of the US Federal Register returns nothing at all for either National Jerry Day or Jerry Day.

TIMELINE

Timeline

Geraldine coined in a sonnet

Henry Howard invented the name for a poem praising Lady Elizabeth FitzGerald, whom he called The Geraldine.

Tom and Jerry enter English

Pierce Egan's Life in London gave the language Corinthian Tom and Jerry Hawthorn, a pairing attested in print by 1828.

First federal records list Jerry

The opening year of American name data already carried more than ten Jerrys for every Gerald.

Jerry passes Gerald for good

The shorter name took a lead among American boys that it has held in every year since.

Jerry's biggest year

The name reached its highest annual count in the American record, then began a long decline.

GOOD TO KNOW

Surprising facts about National Jerry Day

British soldiers used the name for the enemy

The Online Etymology Dictionary dates Jerry as British Army slang for a German to 1919. It calls the derivation from the male nickname probable rather than settled, and records a rival account tracing it to the German helmet's likeness to a chamber pot.

A fuel can inherited that wartime nickname

The jerry can is dated to 1943 and takes its name from Jerry meaning a German. The container was a German design that the Allies copied.

The cartoon arrived after the climb, not before it

Puss Gets the Boot introduced the cat and mouse in 1940. Jerry had already climbed into the American top twenty for boys during the 1930s, so the cartoon cannot account for the rise.

One parent name belongs to the Bible's Latin translator

Saint Jerome produced the Vulgate, the Latin Bible, in the 5th century and is counted a Doctor of the Church. Jerome itself has gone to 161,234 American boys since 1880.

Girls were named Jerry for over a century

Jerry appears in the American girls' records in 108 of the 146 years on file, last in 2017. The agency omits any name given to fewer than five babies in a year, so that end date marks a threshold rather than a stop.

GET INVOLVED

How to Celebrate National Jerry Day

EDITOR'S PICK

Ask a Jerry what is on the birth certificate

The answer is genuinely unpredictable, because the short form serves several unrelated formal names. It may also just be Jerry, which American parents have registered outright since the records began.

LOOK

Look up your own name in the federal records

The Social Security Administration publishes national name counts by year and by sex, going back to 1880. The whole set arrives as one download, so any name in it is searchable in a minute.

READ

Read the dictionary entry behind the name

Behind the Name's Jerry page sets out the parent names, the variant spellings, and the bearers it lists: Jerry Lewis, Jerry Seinfeld and Jerry Rice. It is a short page, and it settles most arguments about the name.

HOST

Host a dinner for the Jerrys you know

Name days work best as an excuse to gather the people who share one. Invite by first name only and let the guests work out what they have in common.

POST

Post the day on July 16 and tag a Jerry

Nothing institutional carries this observance, so it only moves when somebody passes it along. Use the full name in the post, since the day is kept internationally rather than in any one country.

Test your knowledge

How well do you know National Jerry Day?

1 / 8

In the Social Security Administration's published table of 1940s names, which ranked higher among boys?

Answer

No. It is an unofficial observance with no legal standing located, so it is an ordinary working day.
