HOW THE HOLIDAY CAME TO BE

A 2018 first is claimed, and not established.

National Isaac Day appears as a December 3 entry on several independent holiday-listing sites. A claim that the first was celebrated in 2018 travels with it and is established by no primary or secondary record, and no founder, proclamation or establishing record has been located.

INTRO

Ninety-eight years outside the American top hundred

Isaac spent ninety-eight years off the Social Security Administration's list of the hundred most common American boys' names. National Isaac Day now lands on a name that is comfortably back inside it.

That is a long wait, and it is not the longest. August stayed off the list for 132 years before returning. Oliver managed 105.

Of every male name the agency has ever ranked in an annual top hundred, only those two spent longer away and then came back. Isaac is third.

ORIGINS

Isaac Day history

INTRODUCTION

The name arrives in the book of Genesis already carrying a joke. Abraham throws himself on his face and laughs when he is told a son is coming. A chapter later, Sarah laughs to herself.

Isaac renders the Hebrew name Yitsḥaq, which Behind the Name reads as he will laugh, he will rejoice, from a verb meaning to laugh. When the boy is born, Sarah says God has brought her laughter.

CHAPTER 01

How the name travelled

Britannica places Isaac in Genesis as the second of the patriarchs of Israel, the only son of Abraham and Sarah, and the father of Esau and Jacob. Genesis gives the name and explains it in the same passage.

The same Hebrew root travelled into another language entirely. Ishaq is the Arabic form of the name, and the Saheeh International translation renders Qur'an 37:112 as good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.

English took it up slowly. Behind the Name records Isaac as an occasional English Christian name in the Middle Ages, more common among Jews, and dates its wider use to the period after the Protestant Reformation.

CHAPTER 02

The languages that kept it

Behind the Name files Isaac at once as an English, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, French, Jewish and Biblical name. The same entry puts the physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton (1643-1727) at the head of its famous bearers, with the science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov behind him.

CHAPTER 03

A day with no author

December 3 carries no such paper trail. No founder, proclamation or establishing record has surfaced for the observance, and the Federal Register's full text, indexed from 1994, does not contain its name.

The name does have older days elsewhere. Behind the Name lists traditional name days for it in seven countries, on six different dates. December 3 is not among them.

GOOD TO KNOW

Surprising facts about National Isaac Day

Five more births and the exile never happens

In 1897 the hundredth name on the list was Everett, with 179 births, against Isaac on 175. Because ties are broken alphabetically, Isaac would have needed 180 to take the place.

Isaac is in every file ever published

Isaac appears in all 146 annual name files the Social Security Administration has released since 1880. Exactly 471 male name strings have a complete run.

Its biggest year and its best year differ

Isaac's highest American birth count came in 2007, at 10,274. Its best rank arrived six years later, at number 28.

Girls have carried it too, quietly

Isaac appears as a girls' name in 74 of the 146 American files, first in 1919. It has never reached more than 41 girls in a single year.

Isaiah is not a version of Isaac

Behind the Name traces Isaiah to different Hebrew roots meaning Yahweh is salvation. The two names only look like relatives in English.

WHY THIS DAY MATTERS

Why We Love National Isaac Day

SPELLING

One name, five separate lines in one register.

The Office for National Statistics publishes England and Wales birth names by exact spelling, and its own note says similar names spelled differently are counted separately. In 2025 that put Isaac at 1,331 births, with Issac, Ishaq, Isaak and Izaak holding four separate lines below it.

SCALE

331,508 births in the American files

The Social Security Administration's national files record 331,508 American boys named Isaac between 1880 and 2025. That count covers births where the person holds a Social Security Number, which is the population those files describe.

CONTINUITY

One of 23 survivors from 1880

Of the 100 boys' names in the Social Security Administration's 1880 top hundred, only 23 were still in the top hundred in 2025. Isaac is one of them.
