INTRO

In 1974 the name Ford hit its floor

In August 1974 a man named Ford took the oath of office as president of the United States. That same year, six American boys were given the name. As a share of all boys born, it was the thinnest the name has run in any of the 145 years the federal data reports it.

The name climbed back through the 2010s and reached its highest point on record in 2021. Henry Ford had been dead since 1947 by then, and Gerald Ford since 2006.

The date set aside for it is 6 March. No claim of authorship has ever surfaced, and the earliest trace located is a calendar listing archived in 2022.

INTRODUCTION

A ford is a shallow place in a river, the spot where a road can cross without a bridge. The surname marks the people who lived beside one, and possibly the official who kept it passable. That is the English answer; in Ireland the same four letters arrived by a different road.

CHAPTER 01

Five Irish names, one English word

Patrick Woulfe's 1922 index of Irish surnames records Ford standing in for five different Gaelic names. Mac an Atha, Mac Conshnamha and Mac Giolla na Naomh are there, along with O Fuarain and O Giollarnach. He lists them as separate surnames, not as variants of one.

Forde turns up again among the surnames Irish families took up as a supposed translation of their own. Citing O'Donovan, Woulfe blamed ridicule from English magistrates and lawyers who did not speak the language.

CHAPTER 02

The Ford who was born one

Henry Ford never had to acquire the name. He was born a Ford in Wayne County, Michigan, in 1863, to Mary Litogot and William Ford, a native of County Cork who reached America in 1847.

On 16 June 1903 he and twelve others put up $28,000 and turned the surname into a company. In 1919 he, his wife and his son bought out every remaining shareholder for $105,820,894.

He also used that company to distribute antisemitism. Every Model T buyer was automatically subscribed to his newspaper, which from 22 May 1920 ran the series The International Jew. Hitler kept a portrait of Ford in his private office and in 1938 gave him the Grand Cross of the German Eagle, Germany's highest honour for a foreign citizen.

An apology followed in 1927, and he closed the paper the same year. Orders to burn the book and halt overseas printing went out too, and the museum records that they were ignored.

CHAPTER 03

A day with no author

Set against all that, the observance itself is silent. No proclamation, statute or resolution establishing National Ford Day appears in the Federal Register, and no organiser or campaign has put its name to it.

The oldest evidence located is a 2022 capture of a holiday calendar. It tells us the day is at least that old and nothing else. Why the date falls where it does is written down nowhere.

Surprising facts about National Ford Day

Gerald Ford was born Leslie Lynch King, Jr.

His mother remarried a Grand Rapids paint salesman called Gerald R. Ford in 1916, and the family began using the name at once. The legal change did not follow until 3 December 1935, by which time he had been a Ford in everything but law for nearly twenty years.

John Ford answered to three different names

The director was born John Martin Feeny and worked as John Ford, following his brother Francis, who was using the name first. Britannica also records the name he often claimed as his original, Sean Aloysius O'Feeney or O'Fearna, which was not his birth name either.

John Ford won four directing Oscars and none was a western

The Informer, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley and The Quiet Man each took the Best Director award. The genre he is remembered for never once won him the prize.

Ford Madox Ford turned his first name into his surname

He was born Ford Hermann Hueffer, named for his grandfather, the Pre-Raphaelite painter Ford Madox Brown. After being gassed and shell-shocked in the First World War he dropped Hueffer altogether.

Henry Ford died by candlelight

The Rouge River flooded on 7 April 1947 and cut the power to his Dearborn estate. By the company's own account, kerosene lamps and candles were the only light in the house, a scene it likens to the one at his birth in the same county.

Most family stories about a surname cannot be tested. Ford can: the Census Bureau publishes a national count of everyone who carries it, and the Social Security Administration publishes a year-by-year series for the boys given it as a first name. A curious family can look instead of guess.

Reckoning

The famous bearer complicates the name

The surname travels the world because one man put it on a car. What he then did with the platform that gave him is documented at length by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. A day about the name is a better occasion to say so plainly than to leave it out.

Revival

Parents are choosing it again

Through the 1970s and 1980s Ford was a first name almost nobody picked. That reversed through the 2010s, and the rise holds up against the total births each year, not just in raw counts. The people the day is about are increasingly children rather than industrialists.
