National Ethan Day honors a name that spent most of the twentieth century outside America's 250 most popular boys' names. In 1988 it ranked 261st in the Social Security Administration's count.
Then it moved. One year later it stood at 87th, and no source explains the jump. By 2002 it had reached the top ten, where it stayed for fifteen consecutive years.
Twice it finished second in the country. In 2010 only Jacob outranked it. The name leaves more than a century of federal tables; the day that honors it leaves a calendar entry.
Before it was a name, Ethan was a description. The Hebrew adjective behind it means perennial and ever-flowing, and the lexicons gloss the name itself as enduring.
Its sharpest use in scripture is about water. Amos asks for righteousness like an unfailing stream, and the word rendered unfailing is the name.
The best-known bearer in the text is Ethan the Ezrahite. A superscription in Psalms reads, A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. The book of Kings sets him up as the standard Solomon's wisdom is measured against.
After the Protestant Reformation the name turned up occasionally in English. Behind the Name credits its American spread to one man.
The expedition set off for Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. Its core was 130 Green Mountain Boys, joined by militiamen from Massachusetts and Connecticut. On May 10 the force crossed Lake Champlain and took the garrison at dawn, without firing a shot.
The line that stuck came from the colonel himself. Ethan Allen supposedly demanded that the fort's commander, William Delaplace, surrender his sword in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress, by the Army museum's account.
The name kept collecting namesakes. Charles Scribner's Sons published Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome in New York in 1911.
At the 1939 Chicago Housewares Show, a furniture company named a colonial line for a son of Vermont, as the company still tells it. The business carries the name today.
National Ethan Day sits at the end of that record rather than the start of it. Calendar listings carry the day, while a search of the Federal Register for its name returns nothing at all.

Scholarly lexicons of Biblical Hebrew separate four bearers of the name, not one, including a Levite and a grandson of Judah. One of them turns up in Chronicles sounding bronze cymbals among the singers.
The agency builds its lists from Social Security card applications, and many people born before 1937 never applied. It also excludes any name with fewer than five occurrences, so a missing year means missing from the list, not missing from the country.
Vermont's governor proclaimed a week in 2025 for Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. The proclamation records commemorations in Castleton reaching back to 1925.
