INTRO

A book trade group counted Carlo, Carlos and a surname as Carl

On 2 June 2023 the Children's Book Council told its readers that National Carl Day was the next day. Then it had to decide what a Carl was.

Its answer was generous. The booklist that followed took in Carlo Collodi, Carlos Santana, Charles Dickens and Karl Marx, and it made room for Eric Carle, whose claim on the day is a surname with an e on the end.

Nobody has ever put their name to National Carl Day. Its beginnings are blank in every direction anyone has looked. What it has instead is one trade body's working definition of a name.

CHAPTER 01

A word that meant a man

Carl is the German and Scandinavian spelling of Karl, and what sits under it is unremarkable. Behind the Name traces the element to an Old High German and Old Norse word meaning "man", citing Koebler's Althochdeutsches Woerterbuch and the Cleasby and Vigfusson Icelandic-English Dictionary of 1874. The same reference records a competing derivation from a word for army, and marks it as the alternative.

The spelling reached the United States late, and it came with people. The same reference records that Carl was imported to America in the 19th century by German immigrants.

CHAPTER 02

What America did with it

Carl was on the federal list the year the federal list began, and it has stayed on every one since. From 1887 to 1939 it held a place in the top thirty of the boys' list without missing a year, a run of 53 of them.

Its largest raw numbers came later, in the middle 1950s, long after its best position on the list.

Then the arithmetic turned. The Spanish form Carlos was recorded more often than Carl for the first time in 1972, and has been ahead in each of the 54 years since. That crossing was Carl's doing rather than Carlos's, which is not how the next one went.

CHAPTER 03

The day nobody signed

Who proposed National Carl Day, in what year, and why it landed on 3 June are all unrecorded. The earliest dated observance that can be pointed to is from June 2023, and that is a floor on how long the day has been circulating rather than a date of founding.

What the record does hold is why one organisation bothered with it. The Children's Book Council named Carl Jung, Eric Carle and its own executive director, Carl Lennertz, then handed the list to its resident trivia expert, Sommer Wissner.

A third finish at 22nd

Carl matches its best position for the third time. It never places higher in any year of the record.

The biggest year

American files record 8,313 boys named Carl, the most in any year of the record, with 1955 just behind it at 8,294.

Carl comes down to Carlos

For the first time, more US boys are recorded as Carlos than as Carl. Carl had dropped by 649 from the year before; Carlos rose by eight.

A Carl runs the book trade group

Carl Lennertz becomes executive director of the Children's Book Council, the nonprofit trade association for children's book publishers in North America.

Surprising facts about National Carl Day

The name turned into a word for king

After Charlemagne, the name was taken up as an ordinary word meaning king in several languages, among them Czech kral, Hungarian kiraly, Russian korol and Turkish kral. The root it grew from was a plain word for a man.

Carlo now runs ahead of Carl

US files recorded 254 boys as Carlo in 2024 against 216 as Carl, the first year the Italian form had led, and it led again in 2025. Both series moved to get there, Carlo rising and Carl falling. Count Carl together with Karl, its other spelling, and the order flips straight back.

The man who named everything was a Carl

Carl Linnaeus devised the binomial system that gives every species a two-part name. The Linnean Society, built on his collections, also states plainly that it is important to recognise his role in the origins of modern scientific racism.

Carl is on the girls' list too

American files record 3,190 girls named Carl, spread across 110 separate years. The last of them was registered in 1994.

The federal record quietly rewrites itself

Two captures of the same national file disagree about how many boys were named Carl in 1916, one giving 6,786 and the other 6,785. Historical counts get revised, which is why a lifetime total is a floor rather than a settled number.
