HOW THE HOLIDAY CAME TO BE

The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) established Global Recycling Day in 2018, coinciding with its 70th anniversary on March 18. The idea was first proposed by BIR President Ranjit Baxi during his inauguration speech at the BIR 2015 Dubai Convention. In October 2018, BIR formed the Global Recycling Foundation to support its ongoing growth.
