Early Recognition of Office Workers

During World War II, there was a noticeable shortage of skilled administrative personnel in the United States, spurring an greater awareness of the importance of administrative professionals.

Establishment of National Secretaries Week

On June 1, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer proclaimed the first "National Secretaries Week." Mary Barrett, president of the National Secretaries Association along with C. King Woodbridge, president of Dictaphone Corporation, and Daren Ball, a Young & Rubicam public relations account executive, were pivotal figures forming the holiday.

Name Change to Administrative Professionals Day

The National Secretaries Association changed its name to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), thereby changing "National Secretaries Week" to "Administrative Professionals Week" to reflect the expanding roles in the field.

Recognition of Diverse Roles

Acknowledging the growing diversity of administrative job titles and responsibilities, the IAAP expanded the event to celebrate not just secretaries but a wide range of professional disciplines.
