Advisor Appreciation Day falls on April 21, and nobody can say who put it there. There is no proclamation behind the date, no founding organisation, and no document that explains the choice of day.

The profession it honours is not nearly so vague about its own beginnings. The association that represents academic advisers has a founding date on paper. Its articles of incorporation were signed on May 2, 1979.

That gap is the interesting part. Advising spent decades arguing its way into being a profession, with minutes and journals and a paper trail to prove it. The day that thanks advisers arrived from nowhere, and campuses keep it anyway.

CHAPTER 01

The conference that was not the first

Toni Trombley went to the April 1977 meeting of the American College Personnel Association carrying flyers. They announced something that did not exist yet, the First National Conference on Academic Advising. Thomas Grites was at the same meeting, presenting on the topic of academic advising.

They met by chance. Later that year Grites, Trombley and 275 educators gathered at the University of Vermont in Burlington.

The word "first" on those flyers was not quite accurate. California State University and the University of California had already held an Academic Advising Conference in Fresno on September 30, 1976. The association's own historians record both meetings, and still credit Burlington with signalling the beginnings of a formal national association.

CHAPTER 02

Proving it counted as a profession

The early years were lean. In 1982 the organisation was forced to seek permission to pay its bills in installments.

Recognition arrived in smaller and stranger forms. In 1981, after a campaign led by Carol Ryan, "academic advising" became a descriptor for the Educational Resource Information Center. The association's own journal emerged the same year.

Stability came later. In 1990 the association opened an executive office at Kansas State University and reincorporated in Kansas.

CHAPTER 03

A day with no author

Advisor Appreciation Day has no comparable paper trail. No founder, no announcement, no minutes. The earliest listing that can be dated at all is an archive capture from December 2022, and that fixes only when a listing existed, not when anyone began marking the date.

What the day has instead is use. Campuses put it on the calendar, and the thanks arrive without anyone having been appointed to organise them.

California State University and the University of California hold an Academic Advising Conference on September 30 in Fresno, California.

275 educators in Burlington

Why Advisor Appreciation Day Matters

Caseload

The profession declined to write the number everyone wants to quote.

The obvious question about an adviser's workload has no sanctioned number behind it. NACADA states plainly that it does not have a suggested ratio, because advising duties vary by institution type and by what a given advising office is for. Any campus claiming its staffing meets a professional standard is citing a standard the profession declined to write.

Structure

What wears advisers down is the job's design, not the person

The 2023 study found that advising caseload and organisational context, meaning workload, reward, community and values, were consistently associated with emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation. Demographic characteristics and institutional variables were not. Burnout in this field tracks how the work is arranged rather than who is doing it, which makes it an administrative problem before it is a personal one.

Timing

The profession's own observance is somewhere else entirely

Advisers already have a week set aside by their own association, and it is not in April. NACADA's Global Advising Week runs in May and is anchored to the date the association was incorporated. A campus choosing when to recognise its advising staff is choosing between an unaffiliated April date and the profession's own, and the two are not interchangeable.

This is the most widely repeated claim about the day and nothing supports it. It appears as a bare assertion on holiday-listing sites, with no founder, no specific year and no document behind it. Searching the day returns the sentence back as though it were settled, which is circulation rather than evidence.

That is a separate observance three days earlier, and unlike April 21 its origin is fully documented. John Hancock Retirement Plan Services announced National Financial Advisor Day for April 18 in a dated press release in 2016.

How to Observe Advisor Appreciation Day

Name the decision they changed

Skip the general thank-you. Write to an adviser about one specific choice you made differently after talking to them, whether that was a dropped course, a switched major, or an application you nearly did not send.

SEND

Send it where it stays on record

Copy the department chair or dean when you write. A note that reaches a supervisor can be attached to a personnel file or a promotion case, which a message sent only to the adviser cannot.

BOOK

Book the appointment you have been putting off

If you have been meaning to see an adviser, book it ahead of the registration rush rather than inside it. Arriving early is easier on whoever has to staff the appointment.

RECOGNISE

Recognise the whole advising office

Scheduling staff, front-desk coordinators and the people who manage degree audits keep an advising operation running. Include them by name rather than addressing the thanks to advisers alone.

PUT

Put April 21 on next year's department calendar

Recognition tends to happen when it is scheduled rather than when it is remembered. Add the date to a shared departmental calendar now, alongside the registration deadlines the advising office is already working around.
