Today many of the people who answer to it are women. Alex is the short form of both Alexander and Alexandra, and its feminine versions have charted just as high as the original. A warrior's name went unisex.

INTRODUCTION

For a name so common today, Alex has a surprisingly grand past. In Greek myth, the feminine Alexandra was an epithet of the goddess Hera, and another name for Cassandra. It was a name fit for the divine long before it was fit for a coffee order.

The idea of protection sat inside it from the start. Then a Macedonian teenager turned it into the most famous name in the ancient world, and it has barely left the charts since.

CHAPTER 01

The king who spread it

Alexander the Great was born in 356 BCE at Pella, in Macedonia. By the time he died in 323 BCE, his empire ran from Greece to Egypt to the edge of India. He was 33.

He planted his name as he went. In 332 BCE he founded a city in Egypt and called it Alexandria, after himself. It was one of many places and people that would carry it.

CHAPTER 02

From Iskandar to Alejandro

His fame carried the name across Europe, helped along by the tall medieval tales that grew up around him. Along the way it became the name of eight popes and of kings in Scotland, Poland, and Yugoslavia.

The name reshaped itself in every language it entered, becoming Alejandro in Spain and Aleksandr in Russia. It traveled east, too, surviving as Iskandar in Arabic and Sikandar in Urdu. The same name hides inside all of them, and in Russian it even softens into the pet form Sasha.

CHAPTER 03

A very old name gets a modern day

The holiday is the newest chapter, and by far the thinnest. No founder, proclamation, or first celebration survives in any record. National Alex Day simply turns up on calendars and social feeds, a small salute to a name that has outlasted the empire that spread it.
