INTRO

A 240-place jump that nobody has explained

National Trevor Day sits on a name with one very strange year in its record. It happened in 1966. Trevor climbed 240 places on the Social Security Administration's national list of boys' names.

The year before, 211 American boys were recorded with the name. A year later the count was 663. Nothing in the sources explains why.

The field was 744 male names, each recorded with at least a hundred American births the year before, and none of them rose as far. Set that bar lower and the year belongs to Jared, then Michele, then Heath; raise it past the 211 Trevor started from and Trevor leaves its own field. Measure raw births added rather than places climbed, and seventeen names beat Trevor.

Trevor Day history

INTRODUCTION

In June 1346 a cleric named John Trevor was consecrated bishop of St Asaph, in Avignon, and was sent over to Wales the following month. He had the post because his uncle turned it down. The Dictionary of Welsh Biography describes him plainly as a climber, and notes that one authority dates the ceremony to Rome six years later instead.

A later John Trevor held the same see, and the two get mixed up. He was probably a native of Trevor, a village near Llangollen whose Welsh name joins tref, a homestead, to mawr, large. He read the sentence of Richard II's deposition aloud in full Parliament, then went over to Owain Glyn Dwr.

CHAPTER 01

From a village to a first name

For centuries the word stayed attached to places and to the families who came from them. Behind the Name dates the shift to a given name in the United Kingdom to the middle of the twentieth century. The General Register Office lists Trevor nowhere in its 1904 top hundred for boys.

A decade later it appears, in last place on that list. Its high point across the ten-yearly snapshots is number 30, reached at mid-century.

CHAPTER 02

Then the two countries pulled apart

What happened next is the part the American story leaves out. On the England and Wales list Trevor slips to number 38 in the following snapshot. Two snapshots later it is off the top hundred altogether.

The American series was moving the other way through exactly those decades. By the year Trevor reaches its best American rank, it has already left the England and Wales top hundred. These are separate registries with separate rules, so the honest claim is about direction, not about which country liked the name more.

CHAPTER 03

A day nobody signed

National Trevor Day itself leaves no such trail. An exact-phrase search of the Federal Register returns nothing for its name, on a corpus that carries hundreds of documents containing the word Trevor.

No founder, no proclamation, no registration. Two bishops of St Asaph carried the name into the written record long before anyone thought to put it on a calendar.

John Trevor was consecrated at Avignon in June and sent to Wales the next month, after his uncle Griffin de Trevor declined the see.

The second John Trevor dies abroad

He died on 10 or 11 April while on a mission to Paris, years after transferring his allegiance to Owain Glyn Dwr.

Seventeen American boys enter the record

Trevor appears in the Social Security Administration's national data for the first time, with seventeen boys recorded that year.

Number 30 in England and Wales

The General Register Office's decade snapshot puts Trevor at number 30 among boys' names in England and Wales, its best position in that series.

The American count peaks

American files record 6,598 boys named Trevor, more than in any other single year.

UNESCO lists the aqueduct at Trevor

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal, conceived by Thomas Telford, was announced as a World Heritage Site in June.

The Office for National Statistics recorded twelve boys named Trevor in England and Wales in 2025, at rank 2,014. The name did not reach the published Wales top 100 that year.

SPELLING

The registries keep the spellings apart

Both registries rank names by the exact spelling entered at birth, so Trevor, Trever and Trevon are three separate records rather than one. That makes the American total of 161,164 a count of one spelling, and it leaves the Trevers and the Trevons with histories of their own.

American girls were named Trevor too
