INTRO

A name at number one: just not in America

National Nathaniel Day sounds like an American occasion. The Philippine registry disagrees. Its civil registrars have logged Nathaniel as the most common name given to newborn boys nearly every year since 2015.

In the United States the same name has been drifting the other way. The federal file now ranks it 140 among newborn boys. That is a long way down from the top 100 it once held.

The day itself is the thin part of this story. Nobody has claimed authorship, and nothing on file explains the date.

Nathaniel Day history

INTRODUCTION

The name reaches the New Testament through a single scene. In the Gospel of John, Jesus watches a man walk toward him and says, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" The man is called Nathanael.

Who he was afterward is an open question. A 9th-century tradition identified him with the apostle Bartholomew, a name that is really a patronymic meaning son of Tolmai. Britannica still files that identification as tradition, and Behind the Name goes no further than probably.

CHAPTER 01

An English spelling that beat the scriptural one

English took up the name at the Protestant Reformation and has used it steadily since. It chose Nathaniel, and it kept choosing it, even though Nathanael is the spelling most versions of the New Testament print. Hanks and Hodges set that preference down in their Oxford dictionary of first names in 1990.

CHAPTER 02

Salem's one-letter edit

The most famous American to carry the name edited it on the way in. His people were Salem Puritans named Hathorne, and John Hathorne sat on the bench as one of three judges in the witchcraft trials that began in 1692. Britannica records that his descendant later wondered whether the family's fading prosperity might be a retribution.

That descendant was Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Britannica states the change flatly: he added a w to his surname when he began to write. Why he did it is not settled. The Salem Witch Museum calls the motive speculation, either distance from his great-great-grandfather's part in the trials or simply a period fashion for older English spellings.

CHAPTER 03

A date that arrived without paperwork

Set against that, the observance itself is a footnote. National Nathaniel Day appears on holiday-listing calendars and travels under its own hashtag, and no founder, proclamation, or establishment record has been located for it. The name has a long paper trail, and the day has almost none.

Three judges heard the witchcraft trials that opened that year, John Hathorne among them.

Greene takes the southern command

Nathanael Greene, carrying the New Testament spelling, became commander in chief of the Continental Army in the South in December.

Hawthorne born into the Hathorne line

Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4 in Salem, Massachusetts, four generations after the judge.

The Scarlet Letter reaches print

Hawthorne published the novel that carried his altered surname into every American classroom.

Nathaniel Adams Cole is born

Born on March 17 in Montgomery, Alabama, he would be known worldwide as Nat King Cole.

Nathaniel enters the US top 100

The federal name file put the spelling inside the hundred most common newborn boys' names.

Three strings the registry will not merge

American record-keeping files Nathaniel, Nathanael and Nathan as three separate entries, and Nathan alone accounts for 587,497 boys since 1880. Anyone who says how common the name is has already chosen which of the three they are counting.

FICTION

Salem's judge came back as a villain

The Salem Witch Museum records that Judge Hathorne resurfaces as the antagonist Judge Pyncheon in The House of the Seven Gables, published in 1851. The name's most famous bearer put his own ancestor into print as the villain.

The Bible's spelling was too rare to count until 1915

Nathanael does not appear in the federal name file at all for its first 35 years, because fewer than five boys a year received it. It turns up in every single year only from 1943 on.

Nathaniel and Nathan have traded the lead twice

Nathan ran about two to one ahead in the 1880s, then Nathaniel passed it and stayed ahead from the 1920s through the 1950s. Nathan retook the lead in the 1960s and, by the 1970s, had roughly tripled past it.

Its best rank and its biggest year are four years apart

Nathaniel's high-water rank came in 1998, at number 60. Its largest headcount came in 2002, when 6,813 American boys got the name.

Nat King Cole's family name was originally Coles

Britannica gives the singer as Nathaniel Adams Cole, with the family name recorded as originally Coles.

Ten different men in the Old Testament carry it

Strong's Hebrew concordance lists Nethanel as the name of ten Israelites. English bibles usually print those bearers as Nethanel or Nethaneel.
