INTRO

Clipped from a name that reference works still dispute

National Jeff Day salutes a name the United States has been counting since 1880. Jeff appears in every one of the 146 annual name files the Social Security Administration has published. Not a single year is missing.

Jeffrey, the longer name Jeff is drawn from, cannot say that. It is absent from the list through most of the first three decades. Its one early appearance came in 1885.

Five boys carried it that year. What the files cannot tell you is what any of those early Jeffs was actually short for. The agency records a name as it was written down, and stops there.

ORIGINS

INTRODUCTION

The Normans carried the name into England, where it settled quickly among the nobility. Two literary bearers fixed it in the language. Geoffrey of Monmouth chronicled in the twelfth century, and Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales in the fourteenth.

Then it drained away. Behind the Name records that by the close of the Middle Ages the name had become uncommon.

CHAPTER 01

An argument about the first syllable

Scholars agree on the back half of the name and nothing else. The second element is Old German fridu, meaning peace, and that has never been in serious doubt.

The front half has three competing candidates, and they are not variations on a theme. One is a North Germanic tribal name, one means territory, and one means foreigner. Behind the Name allows plainly that two or more separate names may have merged into a single form.

CHAPTER 02

Dauzat draws a line

Albert Dauzat pressed the case that Godfrey and Geoffrey were never the same name at all. His reasoning was phonetic rather than historical. An opening go- would have produced Godefroy in Old French, while only an opening gau- regularly yields Geoffroy.

The consequence is awkward for anyone wanting a tidy answer. If Dauzat is right, the popular gloss of the name as something like God's peace attaches to a different word entirely.

CHAPTER 03

A revival, and an unsigned holiday

The name came back in the twentieth century, and it came back respelled. By 1940 Jeffrey was climbing hard on the federal list. That year it drew 799 American boys, up from fewer than a hundred four years earlier.

National Jeff Day itself has no such trail. Searching turns up nothing resembling a founding record, and the earliest archived calendar listing dates only to September 2021. What it has instead is Java Stop, a coffee counter in Agawam, Massachusetts, which opened at six one October morning and sold a drink named the Jeff-Fa-Fa for a youth golf charity.

Godfrey of Amiens, known in French as Geoffroy d'Amiens, died on 8 November, and the date became his feast day.

First federal file lists 66 Jeffs

The opening year of Social Security's national name data recorded 66 boys named Jeff, and no Jeffreys at all.

Jeffrey surfaces once, then vanishes

After its lone early entry the spelling dropped off the federal list completely and did not return until 1910.

Jeffrey overtakes its short form

For the first time in the record Jeffrey outnumbered Jeff, 378 to 164, and it never fell behind again.

Dauzat splits Godfrey from Geoffrey

Albert Dauzat argued that the two names were never one, and that medieval scribes had merged two separate Germanic words.

A Massachusetts coffee shop marks it

Java Stop in Agawam opened for the day with a golf charity, donating two dollars from every Jeff-Fa-Fa coffee.

EVIDENCE

A file can count a name. It cannot say what it stood for.

Social Security records a name exactly as it was written on the application, which makes the files precise about totals and silent about intent. Jefferson sits in the same data from 1880 onward, so a Jeff recorded in the 1880s might have been short for that, for Jeffrey, or for nothing at all.

DECLINE

The name is quietly leaving American birth certificates

Jeff last appeared inside the federal top thousand in 2002 and has fallen steadily since. Only 35 boys were given the name in 2025.

CALENDARS

A French feast day settles what scholars still argue

French calendars mark 8 November for Geoffroy and place Godefroy and Jefferson on the very same date. The distinction Dauzat spent his argument defending was collapsed centuries ago by the people keeping the calendar.
