National Frozen Yogurt Day lands in the middle of winter, which has never stopped anyone. Head to a frozen yogurt shop, fill a cup, and treat the toppings bar as part of the meal.
No founder, declaration or establishment record for the February 6 observance was located in the indexes searched. The International Frozen Yogurt Association, which promotes the day and publishes its list of participating shops, writes that the origins are unclear and that most food holiday sites place it on February 6.
The United States has no legal definition of frozen yogurt. The federal rule for frozen desserts standardizes five products, from ice cream to water ices, and the word yogurt never appears in it. National Frozen Yogurt Day belongs to a food whose definition the government proposed and then withdrew.
The day itself is straightforward. Shops give frozen yogurt away, and TCBY announced its own giveaway for 6 February 2023.
Even the nickname sits oddly in the record. Merriam-Webster files Froyo as a trademark rather than an ordinary word, while frozen yogurt gets a plain noun entry of its own.

The oldest trace of frozen yogurt in California's digitized newspapers is not a food column. It is a grocery advertisement in the South Gate Press, dated 25 April 1963, page 20. Search the rest of the 1960s in that archive and nothing comes back.
Then it multiplies. The same archive matches the phrase 45 times between 1970 and 1974. From 1975 to 1979 it matches 1,308 times.
TCBY Enterprises told its own story to the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the filings are sharper than the marketing. The first company-owned store opened in September 1981. The first franchised stores followed in June 1982, and the company incorporated in Delaware on 10 January 1984.
Frank D. Hickingbotham ran it, chairman and chief executive of the company and its predecessors since 1970. On 30 November 1994 TCBY counted 2,801 locations. Its executive offices took up about 89,200 square feet of the TCBY Tower, a 40-storey office building in downtown Little Rock.
Two citizen petitions asked the Food and Drug Administration to say what frozen yogurt is, and the agency published a proposed standard of identity on 31 May 1991. It withdrew that proposal on 26 November 2004.
The withdrawal swept up proposals published more than five years earlier, which the agency said were no longer viable candidates for final action. On this one it recorded a single supporting comment and answered in three words: "The agency agrees."
The day's own paper trail is thin, and it stops. HathiTrust matches the phrase in Chase's for the 1994 through 1997 editions, and in no other. Which calendar date those entries carried is not readable from the index.
The International Frozen Yogurt Association, founded in 2013, is candid about the gap. Its own post on the day calls the origins unclear, and says most food holiday sites put the date at February 6.
That post also names a rival. TCBY declared June a National Frozen Yogurt Month in 1993, with the first Sunday, spelled Sundae, as the day. That date has an author; February 6 runs shop by shop on a promotion nobody has claimed.

The International Frozen Yogurt Association publishes a single roundup of the shops running February 6 offers, which is how a scattered business acts in unison for a day. The association calls it "the biggest day of the year for the frozen yogurt industry." That is a trade whose US output has roughly halved in a decade, still putting on a free-cup day.
The live and active cultures claim on a tub of frozen yogurt rests on a voluntary industry seal, not on a federal rule. The International Dairy Foods Association runs that seal, and sets a lower bar for the frozen product than for the refrigerated one.
In 2017 the association put the case for a rename in print: "It seems silly to continue to call frozen yogurt day, National Frozen Yogurt Day." Its own preference is International Frozen Yogurt Day, and it writes the name both ways, abbreviating the day as NFYD or IFYD.
